Student Employment

» Student Employment

At Chapman, you have countless opportunities to find work. You can:

  • Get a job on campus — nearly every department on campus employs students.
  • Find great employment opportunities down the street in Old Towne Orange or in the surrounding community.
  • Land an internship to gain professional experience (and maybe even get paid).

That’s why so many Chapman students find jobs right on campus or nearby.

Here are all the ways you can gain experience, earn college credit and (of course) get paid with a job while at Chapman.

On-Campus Jobs

When it comes to convenience, on-campus jobs can’t be beat.

We have plenty of employment opportunities throughout the year, so you can find a job that fits both your schedule and your interests right on campus.

Here’s what you need to know about working on campus:

  • All Chapman students can work on campus (even without Work-Study).
  • Jobs are part time (19 hours per week max, and you can usually work less).
  • Every on-campus job pays at least California’s minimum wage. (As of January 1, 2024, California minimum wage is $16.)
  • On-campus jobs are like any job: you have to search, apply and interview for them.
  • Some jobs are open to everybody (for example: working the front desk at the gym).
  • Other jobs are related to specific majors or require particular skills (for example: being a research assistant in a lab).
  • Some jobs will give you academic credit (or will look really good on your resume).
  • Working on campus can be fun, but it is a serious responsibility just like any other job.

Our job portal is always up to date with the current job openings on campus, and we add jobs regularly throughout the semester.

Federal Work-Study

Federal Work-Study is an award program that helps college students get jobs on campus.

If you qualify, Federal Work-Study guarantees you a certain amount of financial aid that you’ll work to earn. But you still need to find a job to receive this financial aid.

In other words, once you find a job on campus, part of your paycheck will come from financial aid. (But don’t worry: you won’t make any less money, and you’re guaranteed at least minimum wage.)

Federal Work-Study is awarded based on need, so submit your FAFSA to be considered for the program.

"Working in the Office of Admission has been a valuable part of my Chapman experience. Not only did I make amazing friends, but I've gained professional skills I never would have learned in class."

Off-Campus Jobs

Another great option is working off campus. You can find plenty of job opportunities in the area — including many within walking distance of campus.

Old Towne Orange oldtowne-orange.jpg

Chapman is just two blocks from Old Towne Orange, a historic district where plenty of students find work (restaurants, coffee shops, clothing stores, etc.). Take a short walk through Old Towne, and you’ll find a “Now Hiring” sign or two.

Land one of these jobs, and you can easily walk from class to work.

Internships

Internships aren’t just a great way to get work experience and earn academic credit at the same time. They’re critical to the college experience. And on top of that, some internships will even pay you.

That’s why over 80% of Chapman students do an internship during their academic career.

Doing an internship in college will help you:

  • Learn valuable skills you can use in the professional world.
  • Earn academic credit and/or get paid.
  • Get experience doing what you’re passionate about.
  • Network with people in the field (and maybe even line up a job for after you graduate).

You can find internships by:

  • Going to a career expo on campus (we hold them every semester).
  • Talking to your career advisor.
  • Asking your professors.

Using Handshake, our Chapman-exclusive professional network (think LinkedIn but just for Chapman students).

"Through a semester-long internship at Segerstrom Center for the Arts, I was exposed to many different departments essential to an organization's overall operation. I also learned the value of effective communication, compromise, and adaptability in the workplace."
