Chapman University proudly celebrates all aspects of a student’s unique identity, including their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression.

That’s why we take pride in fostering a vibrant and inclusive queer community to support all LGTBQIA+ individuals. Located in an LGBTQIA-friendly region, you’ll have several resources whenever you need them. Welcome from Steele Viverette, admission counselor and advocate for LGBTQIA+ applicants

As an Admission Counselor, Chapman alum, and member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I hope to serve as an advocate for you during your college search and application process. If you need any support or guidance throughout this journey, know that I am here for you!

I know firsthand the importance of finding an inclusive environment where you can thrive, and I am so thankful to have found that at Chapman. I hope I can help you along your journey as you find that environment for yourself.

Outside scholarships

Unless otherwise noted, these scholarships are open to all LGBTQIA+ individuals. Details of each scholarship are subject to change, so make sure to check the scholarship's website for the most up-to-date details. 

  • Gamma Mu Foundation Scholarship: Applicants must identify as gay and male (except for the Folisi & Goodwin Scholarship and the Phil Papel Memorial Scholarship, which are awarded to LGBT students) and be a U.S. citizen.
    • Application deadline: March 31 
  • PFLAG National LGBTQ Scholarship Fund: Presents several scholarships available to students by state. 
    • Refer to the website for specific criteria and application deadlines for each scholarship
  • Point Foundation National LGBTQ Scholarship Fund: In addition to funding, recipients receive access to leadership development programs, mentorship or coaching and the support of a community of scholars and alumni.
    • Application period: January through November 
  • Pride Foundation Scholarship: Awards over 60 scholarships to students facing incredible barriers, regardless of school, major, or GPA.
    • Applicants must identify as LGBTQ+ or questioning and live in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, or Washington
    • Application period: October 11 - January 6
    • Late applications reviewed in January through early April

LGBTQIA+ clubs and activities

At Chapman, you’re encouraged to celebrate your identity and interests through involvement with student organizations, extra-curricular activities, and co-curricular programs. Some of the LGBTQIA+ student organizations at Chapman include:

  • Queer Student Alliance: A place of trans and queer resistance and solidarity that provides a safe and welcoming space for anyone who identifies with the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Queer and Trans People of Color Collective (QTPOC): Creates a space of support for students who are queer and/or transgender and are non-white, of mixed heritage, and/or are part of a racialized or marginalized group based on minority status.

Orientation and commencement activities

Chapman takes great pride in celebrating LGBTQIA+ students by ensuring that their unique identities and achievements are recognized, from orientation through graduation. This involves:

  • Orientation - LGBTQIA+ Affinity Group: This offering connects new students with a network of faculty, staff, and peers who are dedicated to advocating for and supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals.
  • Lavender Graduation: An annual commencement ceremony to honor LGBTQIA+ students and their achievements.

At Chapman, we support academic endeavors both at home and abroad.

Related minors

  • LGBTQ Studies minor offers you the opportunity to analyze facts, theories, research, and realities concerning diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people, communities and histories. 
  • Women’s and Gender Studies minor allows you to study the interdisciplinary approaches of women and gender inequality; cultural representations of women and their social roles; and the social axes of gender, race, class, and sexuality. 

You will be able to add minors once you begin taking classes at Chapman. You can learn more about majors and minors here.
