Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus

ยป Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus

At Chapman, one of your general education requirements is the Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus.

The Liberal Arts and Science Focus is centered around introducing you to a variety of humanities, arts and science classes.

Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus: Inquiry Areas

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus is split up into six “Inquiry Areas.”

Each Inquiry Area covers a different discipline with the humanities, arts and sciences.

You must take one class (3–4 credits) from each of the six Inquiry Areas (a total of 18–19 general education credits overall).

See all the classes for each Inquiry Area using the list below.

When should I take my Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus?

You do not have to take the Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus during your first year.

We encourage you to take it whenever it best fits into your schedule.

There are classes available at the 100, 200, 300 and 400 levels for all Inquiry Areas, giving you the flexibility to complete this requirement at the level that makes the best academic sense for you.

Tips for completing the Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus

There are many classes for you to choose from as you complete your Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus. Here are some tips to help you decide which ones to take.

  • Take classes to explore second majors and minors. The Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus is a great opportunity to to explore subjects you may want to double major or minor in. That way you can see if they're right for you.
  • Choose classes that you know you will do well in. If the rest of your classes in a particular semester are hard — for example, 300- or 400-level classes for your major — try balancing out your workload with a Liberal Arts and Sciences Focus class on the easier side in a subject you excel in.
  • Choose the classes that sound the most exciting to you. You're bound to stay more engaged and do better in classes where the material interests you. It may sound like a no-brainer, but it can still be a great strategy for success in college.
