» Proctorio
Features
Proctorio enables instructors to utilize machine learning and facial detection technology to remotely proctor exams to help discourage cheating. Proctorio scans a student’s ID and face and then uses Canvas to verify the student’s identity. Then, Proctorio captures audio, motion, and systemic changes while the student takes their exam to identify suspicious behaviors. Additional features include:
- Customizing the rules for each exam, including exempting individual students from using Proctorio
- Flagging suspicious behavior for subsequent review by the instructor to determine if cheating has occurred
Should I use Proctorio?
Proctorio allows students to complete an assessment at a remote location, such as their home while helping to ensure the integrity of the exam. It provides a degree of assurance that test-takers are the individuals they claim to be, while significantly deterring misconduct.
While there are benefits to using Proctorio as we teach and learn remotely, it is important to consider whether Proctorio is appropriate to use for your exam. Learning remotely, in addition to taking exams remotely, has caused added stress on students. Introducing a new technology, which some find invasive, as a part of exams may add to this stress.
Proctorio Training
Educational Technology Services is hosting several Proctorio training sessions to show faculty how to effectively use this service.
If you decide to move forward with using Proctorio, please review our Proctorio Instructor tutorials.
We recommend you share this Student Getting Started with Proctorio Guide with your students and make it available in your course.
Accessibility
Some accessibility issues do exist in this software. Knowing that there are issues with accessibility, it is recommended that any users requiring assistive technology or any users reliant on keyboard-only access not be required to use the Proctorio software and instead be provided an alternative means to take the exam.
For questions about accessibility and accommodations please reach out to Disability Services at ds@chapman.edu.
For questions about how to extend time on quizzes in Canvas, please reach out to canvas@chapman.edu
Considerations for Use
- Exam(s) must be in Canvas Quizzes; Proctorio cannot proctor a paper exam.
- File Upload questions cannot be used.
- Students will have limited ability to enter mathematical or chemical equations.
- Proctorio must be used with the Google Chrome browser
- Proctorio only works with Canvas Classic Quizzes
- We recommend no allowed materials OR a fully open-note/open-book exam to maximize the use of Proctorio settings.
- Proctorio has an on-screen calculator and whiteboard available, but these offer limited functionality for complex calculations and work.
- Students should be required to take a practice quiz in Canvas using the tool so that they can ensure the technology works for them prior to a high-stakes exam.
- Be prepared to set Proctorio settings on your exam(s) in Canvas.
- Be prepared to work with Disability Services on accommodations for students who may not be able to test in Proctorio or who may be more likely to have flagged exams.
- After the exam, Proctorio will generate a report of unusual or suspicious behavior (like looking offscreen frequently or trying to open unallowed resources). Be prepared to review these flags to determine if further action is needed.
