At Chapman, we are committed to providing student housing communities that are welcoming to everyone. That’s why we allow you to opt in to gender diverse housing.

Our gender-diverse housing policy offers safe and inclusive on-campus housing arrangements for those who identify outside the gender binary, as well as members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

How gender diverse housing works

Typically at Chapman, you and your roommate(s) share the same reported gender. (Though your neighbors and other building residents may be of a different gender.)

However, if you opt-in to gender diverse housing, you will share a room with people who have also opted in, regardless of gender. A gender diverse room or suite may include people of any sexual orientation or gender identity, or allies. As a part of our commitment to inclusive housing communities, gender diverse housing options are offered in all residential communities for all students.

Opt in on your housing application

When you apply for housing at Chapman, you will pick one of three options:

I want to live in gender diverse housing: Choose this option if a gender diverse housing space is a priority for you. We will try to place you with other students who want or are willing to live in gender diverse housing. This may include students of any sexual orientation or gender identity, or allies.
I am willing to live in gender diverse housing: Choose this option if a gender diverse space is not a priority for you, but you are willing to live in one. This may include students of any sexual orientation or gender identity, or allies.
I do not want to live in gender diverse housing: Choose this option if you prefer that your roommates share your reported gender. You will not be placed in gender diverse housing.

Incoming first-year and transfer students: you opt in to gender diverse housing on your housing application.

Returning students: you opt in to gender diverse housing on your housing application and then by emailing us at reslife@chapman.edu to notify us of your decision and choice of roommates. (You get to choose your roommates as a returning student.)

You do not need to disclose any information to be considered for gender diverse housing.

If you need support or have specific questions, we encourage you to contact us at reslife@chapman.edu. In this case, you may have to disclose information that will help us meet your specific needs. We respect your privacy and do not ask for more information than is necessary to assist you. In accordance with the law, all information that you disclose to us will be kept strictly confidential.

In accordance with federal law and university policy, we will not disclose any information from any student’s educational record beyond directory information (information generally not considered harmful or an invasion of privacy), unless the student has a directory hold.

Yes. If you would like help preparing for a conversation with your roommate about your living preferences or the identities that are most salient to you, we encourage you to speak with your Resident Advisor or Resident Director, or contact us for help at reslife@chapman.edu.

We cannot guarantee that your roommate will identify in any particular way. While gender diverse housing was designed to offer comfortable and safe options for students who identify as transgender, genderqueer, gender questioning, or otherwise outside the gender binary, any student can choose to participate.

We don’t allow incoming first-year or transfer students to choose their own roommates. You may contact us at reslife@chapman.edu to make a preferred roommate request. We consider requests on a case-by-case basis and make no guarantee that we will be able to fulfill them.

If you are returning to Chapman (meaning you are not an incoming first-year or transfer student), you may choose your own roommates, or opt not to choose your own roommates.

Choosing your own roommates: The roommate selection process takes place in the spring semester each year. If the roommate you hope to live with is of a different reported gender, you and they will need to opt into gender diverse housing on the housing application, then inform us of your participation in gender diverse housing at reslife@chapman.edu. When you email us, inform us of who you are hoping to live with and that you opted in to gender diverse housing.

Not choosing your own roommates: You will follow the same process as incoming students and indicate your preference regarding gender diverse housing.

We discourage romantic/sexual relationships between roommates. It is our experience that students gain more from our residential communities when they do not reside with a partner. So while you may choose your partner as your roommate if you are a returning student, we don’t recommend it.

The number of gender diverse residence hall rooms, suites, and apartments on campus will depend on the demand for such accommodations. gender diverse spaces will be offered in all residence halls, including Fenestra (first-year) communities, suites, and apartments. There is no limit to how many spaces can be assigned as gender diverse.
