The Research Office of Launch Labs at Chapman University offers data-driven and systematic research insights into communication and organizing for startups. By conducting interviews, observations, focus groups, and surveys, the Research Office provides entrepreneurs and teams strategies to innovate and advance their ventures forward.

The Research Office is staffed by students (Lydia Benjamin and Jamie McCain), a research fellow (Andrew Schrock), and faculty member (Kerk Kee) from the OCT Group. This office is a partnership between the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics of the Argyros School of Business and Economics, and the School of Communication.

Principal Investigator
Kerk Kee (Ph.D., 2010, The University of Texas at Austin) is an Associate Professor of Communication and the Principal Investigator of the OCT Group at Chapman University. With an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, and graduate training in the social sciences, he teaches classes in organizational communication and workplace technologies. He also conducts research on the diffusion of innovations -- how innovations spread in the marketplace and social system, across various contexts such as organizational, health, environmental, big data, scientific, etc.

Andrew R. Schrock
Post-Doctoral Fellow
Andrew R. Schrock (Ph.D.) is a post-doctoral fellow at Chapman University. He received a Ph.D. in Communication from The University of Southern California, a B.A. in computer science from Brandeis University, and an M.A. in Communication from University of Central Florida. His research looks at how grassroots groups and institutions create shared infrastructure that improves participation and collaboration. Andrew’s research has appeared in New Media & Society; the International Journal of Communication; American Behavioral Scientist, and Big Data & Society.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Lydia Benjamin is a recent graduate of Chapman University where she received a B.A. in Communication Studies. Lydia has been a part of the OCT Group since January 2016 as an Undergraduate Research Assistant. As a research assistant, she helps collect and analyze data regarding the diffusion of innovations.

Undergraduate Research Assistant
Jamie McCain is a senior at Chapman University pursuing a B.A. in Strategic and Corporate Communication with a minor in Business Administration. Jamie has been an Undergraduate Research Assistant since January 2016 and enjoys learning about qualitative research methods and the diffusion theory. In addition, due to her background growing up in the Silicon Valley she is also interested in studying start-ups through the communication lens of why they fail or succeed.
