Joanna earned her BA in English: Writing from the University of Redlands, MA in Screenwriting from the John Huston School of Film and Digital Media at the National University of Ireland Galway, and MFA in Creative Writing from Chapman University. While at Chapman, she was a founding editor of Chapman's now-former graduate literary journal, Anastamos.

She's currently a Senior Editor of Electronics at Reviewed, part of the USA TODAY Network. She was previously a staff reporter at Gizmodo where she covered the digital divide, big tech lawsuits, computer hardware, and cloud gaming. She was also a staff writer for PC Gamer and Maximum PC with a split focus between hardware and videogames. Before working as a tech journalist Joanna was a freelance games journalist, specializing in reviews. Joanna also taught creative writing at the Orange County School of the Arts for several years, focusing on game writing, interactive fiction, technology as literature, and many other topics. She currently mentors high school students in game writing, fiction writing, and journalism.
