First-Year Pre-Registration Advising

» First-Year Pre-Registration Advising

As an incoming first-year student, you must follow the steps below to prepare for your course registration for your first semester.

You can also contact your summer advisor with any questions.

Required: Attend a Virtual Advising Session

You will get an email with a link to schedule your Online Advising Session.

Your Virtual Advising Session will give you a chance to meet your Academic Advisor in a small group. There will be plenty of time to answer your questions during the session and we expect you to participate and be fully engaged with your camera on.

It covers a variety of topics, including Chapman’s:

  • General Education program.
  • Math Assessment test.
  • Block scheduling.
  • Language requirement and proficiency/placement testing options.
  • Recommended courses for your first year.
  • Registration process, including a step-by-step guide of how to use your Student Center to register for classes.

This Advising Session is required. A New Student Advising Hold will be placed on your account before registration opens in July and will not be removed until you have completed this requirement.

Required: Complete your Math Assessment

All incoming first-year students must take a Math Assessment upon entry. Please review our Math Assessment website for all of the details.

Take the Math Assessment test seriously and prepare by taking the practice test so that you aren’t placed into a lower level than is appropriate for your ability. There are no re-takes.

If you do not complete your math assessment, you will have a Math Hold added to your account and will not be able to register for classes.

Submit the Language Planning Form

At Chapman, you are required to take language classes as part of your General Education requirements

However, you may be able to waive this requirement, or place into a higher level class, depending on your fluency level.

To determine the best option for you, we encourage you to:

Registering for classes

Find your registration date and time

Incoming spring students will register for their classes in December. Each student is assigned a specific date/time during which their registration window opens.

These registration appointments are assigned in mid-June. Visit our website to learn how to find your specific date and time in your Student Center.

Understand the process to register/change classes

Completing the steps above should prepare you to register for or change your classes. The last step is to just understand the processes to register for or change classes

Note that most first-year students entering in the fall will be block scheduled into 1-5 classes. You can learn more about block scheduling here.

Find your advisor

All undergraduate students have an assigned Academic Advisor. You can find yours—and reach out with any questions—on our Advising website.
