Findings from Chapman's Loon Resesarch Lab are clear: Wisconsin's loon population is declining. A parallel picture is taking shape in Minnesota, where the body condition of adult loons has begun to decline and where the adult survival rate is lower than in Wisconsin. Currently, loons are projected to be gone from both states by the end of this century.

The Loon Project is a scientific investigation of population dynamics, reproductive success, and territorial behavior of common loons in the Upper Midwest. Historically, this work has focused on territorial and nesting behavior, but recent findings have turned the lab's attention to conservation.

The Loon Project Research Fund directly supports the Loon Research Lab through Chapman by providing support with research, travel, and equipment to students and faculty. Support Now »

The endowment proceeds will be used to advance Schmid College of Science and Technology undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students pursuing studies in the field of environmental science and policy. The funds will be used to provide awards to support student research opportunities and may include student participation in outreach programs, seminars, conferences, internships, or other experiential opportunities. The mission of the Center of Excellence in Computation, Algebra and Topology (CECAT) is to provide a forum for world class interdisciplinary research where computation meets algebra, topology and related mathematical fields.

The CECAT has a track record of supporting its mission by hosting workshops that attract national and international visitors, attracting national and international visitors for research collaboration, developing affiliations with research groups at fellow institutions, seeking external funding and developing online mathematical resources.

In addition, the Center will seek to support post-doctoral fellows and graduate students in affiliation with Chapman's graduate programs in Computational Sciences. Support Now »

The Center of Excellence in Complex and Hypercomplex Analysis (CECHA) is a group of mathematicians and physicists from the Schmid College of Science and Technology at Chapman University who joined some of their national and international collaborators to form this Center of Excellence. The research conducted under the center's umbrella is mainly motivated by the latest results in Clifford and Hypercomplex Analysis and endeavors to find new ways in which this research can be applied in mathematics and physics.

The members of this center of excellence draw on their research experience and use analytical and computational techniques to build sound differential and integral theories in this context, as well as possible applications in Quantum Physics and other interdisciplinary fields. Support Now »

On December 5, 2015, Chapman alumnus Leonardo Eifert ’13 passed away due to post-surgery complications. Leonardo was a beloved mathematics major and physics minor who was well known about campus for his friendliness, compassion for others, and patience. He is the son of Dr. Georg H. Eifert, an emeritus professor of psychology and former associate dean of Schmid College of Science and Technology, and his wife Diana.

In 2017, thanks to the generosity of community members, Leo’s friends, family, and Chapman faculty and staff, Schmid College formally established the Leonardo Eifert Scholarship for Imaginative Applications of Mathematics Endowment.

This endowment provides scholarship support to undergraduate students at Chapman who major in mathematics and have a variety of interests including music, chess, and other highly innovative areas. Support Now »
