It is with great pleasure that we invite you to attend the 2007 Percussion Symposium on Saturday, December 15th, 2007.  This unique day-long event aims to bring together percussion aficionados, students of all ages, and many of the finest percussionists in Southern California.  Throughout the day, interactive masterclasses, world premiers of solo and ensemble music, panel discussions, and debut performances will take place, concluding with an evening concert by the critically-acclaimed          Third Coast Percussion Quartet (www.thirdcoastpercussion.com), in the Conservatory’s beautiful Salmon Recital Hall.

Although structured to appeal to a dynamic range of percussionists and enthusiasts, the Symposium’s underlying principles are:

- to expand our knowledge, conception, and appreciation of percussive arts, and particularly to feature those artists who live and work in Southern California;
- to excite and inspire students, professionals, music therapists, improvisers, composers, and collaborators;
- to provide an environment for relationships to begin, or to grow stronger, be it between the student and teacher, composer and performer, or audience and artist

Symposium Overview

The day will begin with a two-hour solo & ensemble masterclass, where selected participants will perform and receive coaching by the four members of the Third Coast Percussion Quartet (details below).  Following, a series of performances will take place in quick succession, featuring the following artists:

- Ross Karre, doctoral candidate, University of California, San Diego
• Percussion & Projection Performance

- David Johnson, director of percussion, California Institute of the Arts
• Keyboard Percussion, Composition & Improvisation

- BoorBaar Percussion Trio
• Self-proclaimed “Jedi Rhythm Freaks” perform original music fusing Indian classical music, West African drumming, American Drum Corps, and Reich-inspired minimalism

- “New Works for Percussion”
• Numerous world/regional premiers of ensemble & solo music, featuring the Old Standard Percussion Group, Lynn Vartan, Nick Terry, and more!
Refreshments will be served during a social hour from 5:00 – 6:00 PM, and following an evening break for dinner (restaurants within walking distance), the Third Coast Percussion Quartet will begin their concert at 8pm in Salmon Recital Hall.  The program will include:

David Skidmore - Ritual Music
Owen Clayton Condon - Quadruple Helix
Peter Garland - Apple Blossom
Nico Muhly - Ta and Clap
Toru Takemitsu - Rain Tree
David Johnson - Oregon Variations (David Johnson, marimba soloist)
John Cage - Third Construction

Masterclass Information

The Symposium features a percussion solo & small ensemble masterclass, where selected participants will have the opportunity to perform and receive coaching by the four members of the Third Coast Percussion Quartet (www.thirdcoastpercussion.com).  This is an excellent opportunity to receive free, outstanding, and timely performance coaching, as students will be heading into solo & ensemble season, potential college auditions, and solo recitals.  Your performance/coaching will be recorded with professional video and audio, and made available to the student at no charge.  All percussionists (regardless of level or instrument) are encouraged to participate.  Please see the included nomination form for participation details, or email terry@chapman.edu for more information.

Following a review of all nomination forms, a complete informational packet, including notification of acceptance, and housing options for those who will need to travel will be emailed directly to the student.  The Percussion Symposium is underwritten by Chapman University, ensuring that there is no cost for masterclass students, should an overnight stay in Orange become necessary.

Please keep in mind that the Symposium will take place within a few weeks. To guarantee that your students will have adequate time to prepare, the following timeline has been established:

 November 30th  Deadline for submission of Nomination Form
