Externship ProgramAmong the most rewarding opportunities for Chapman University School of Law students is the Externship Program. Student externs work for judges, government agencies, corporations and public interest organizations, receiving valuable instruction to supplement what they learn in the classroom. Through externships, students develop the practical skills, poise and confidence necessary to be effective practitioners in the courtroom and the law office. Externships also provide insight into professional responsibility and the operation of the legal system, as well as important mentoring opportunities. Students may complete two part-time externships for a total of 8 units, or a single full-time judicial externship for 10 units, both of which satisfy the Lawyering Skills graduation requirement. The Externship Program offers a number of existing externships and, through the efforts of Director Carolyn Young, will also work with students to explore new externships where appropriate. As an example, in 2008, the School of Law established a new externship program with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, upon the request of a third year student who had made initial contact with the team. For details about available externship placements, application requirements, program policies, interview tips, and more, current students should visit the Externship Program page on TWEN. |
