Statement from the Dean, Schmid College of Science The 2009 Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded to Charles K. Kao for his work on transmission of light in fibers and to Willard S. Boyle and George E. Smith for the invention of the CCD sensor. Although Chapman Professor Yakir Aharonov, who was widely mentioned as one of the likely awardees, did not win this year, we of course join the rest of the scientific communities worldwide to congratulate this year's awardees. Professor Aharonov's work is pioneering in the field of quantum theory and is linked to many applications. As we all know, the Nobel Prize is extremely competitive and many, many deserving scientists are never awarded this prestigious prize. The scientific work of faculty and the advances in our understanding of the physical world made by Prof. Aharonov will of course continue. —Menas Kafatos, Ph.D., Dean, Schmid College of Science, Chapman University
| Dr. Yakir Aharonov is a quantum theorist who is one of the most highly regarded scientists in the world. Dr. Aharonov received the prestigious Wolf Prize in 1998 for his co-discovery of the Aharonov-Bohm Effect, one of the cornerstones of modern physics. Current research with Chapman team members Menas Kafatos and Jeff Tollaksen and participants from other universities includes a grant awarded from the Science and Transcendence Advanced Research Series (STAR) for a project titled "Subjective Experience as a Window on Foundational Physics." The aim of the project is to investigate the areas of tension between objective scientific description and our conscious experience.
