» What is the Cost of Attendance?

A student’s Cost of Attendance is an institutional figure that is a part of determining a student’s financial need. The Cost of Attendance is comprised of tuition, general fees, books and supplies, room and board, personal expenses and transportation. Additional items may be included depending on a student's individual circumstances. Those items are also outlined on StudentAid.gov. A student’s Student Aid Index is subtracted from the student’s Cost of Attendance to determine a student’s financial need. This calculation is the same at every institution that offers federal financial aid. While the calculation is the same, the Cost of Attendance figure may create a different financial need for the same student at different institutions. The calculation is as follows:

Tuition and Fees + Living Expenses – SAI = Financial Need

The Cost of Attendance is not a student's actual charges. The Cost of Attendance is strictly used by the Office of Undergraduate Financial Aid to determine financial aid eligibility. These figures may not be directly reflected on a student's bill.
