Biography

Mark Engstrom is a recently retired senior audit partner with Deloitte & Touche LLP (“Deloitte”). Prior to his retirement on June 1, 2019, Mark held key leadership positions with Deloitte, and is recognized for his business acumen, boardroom presence, financial expertise, and extensive international business experience, which included a three-year assignment in Asia.

Mark is a qualified financial expert with global perspective and seasoned judgment, which he demonstrated working with senior management and boards of public and private companies to address challenging business, risk, corporate governance and financial issues - including financings, mergers and acquisitions, global expansion, regulatory actions and complex accounting and financial reporting matters.

He has served in numerous client service and leadership roles during his forty-year tenure at Deloitte, including serving a wide range of clients in a number of industries, including Financial Services, Life Science and Health Care, Technology and Media, Higher Education and Retail and Consumer Products. His clients have ranged from large, global public companies to early-stage and pre-IPO companies. Mark has significant experience working with companies through IPOs, M&A and global acquisition matters. He has also advised and helped onboard newly appointed audit committee chairs, providing his perspective on effective corporate governance practices.

Mark has significant international experience, most notably a three-year assignment in Deloitte’s Seoul, South Korea, office, where he served some of Deloitte’s largest global clients with operations in Korea and throughout Asia. Through this experience, he gained an appreciation for and an understanding of the challenges and opportunities in conducting business in foreign countries and the unique aspects of global capital markets and international financial reporting and auditing. He also gained global perspective and an appreciation for different cultures from his leadership of numerous quality reviews of Deloitte’s audit practices throughout Asia and in South America.

Mark has taught numerous Deloitte learning programs for all levels of professionals, including Technical Excellence for partners, directors and senior managers, regional internal professional practice hot topic sessions, concurring review training and other accounting and auditing topics. He has also been an accounting instructor at the college level. He is currently a Lecturer at Chapman University, where he teaches an Advanced Accounting class in the University’s Masters of Accountancy program.

In his role as National Professional Practice Director, Mark was a senior consultation partner responsible for helping partners make appropriate judgments on complex SEC, risk management, technical auditing and accounting, financial reporting and other professional practice matters.
