Biography
Received B.S. and M.A. degrees in Communication Disorders from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee and California State University-Long Beach respectively; PhD. from Claremont University in Language and Cognition.
Extensive experience in public schools as speech language pathologist, administrator; then in higher education as professor in special education, literacy, communication disorders. K-8 Principal and the Director of Special Education in Fountain Valley School District in California for 21 years. Wrote and directed an AAC Center (1975) with a five-year USDOE grant to establish the first school-based program to match students with severe disabilities with AAC devices to achieve academic goals. Began teaching at Chapman University in 1993, full professor in 2006.
Active in professional organizations; served as president of five national professional organizations, including ASHA (1995). ASHA Fellow and ASHA Honors (2010). Recipient of the Annie Glen Award for Outstanding Leadership in Speech Language Pathology (2008), Scudder Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service at Chapman University twice; Global Clinical Coordinator for Healthy Hearing, a healthcare initiative with Special Olympics to provide hearing screening for athletes with intellectual disabilities in 110 countries; consultant to the Speech-to-Speech Program with the California Public Utilities Commission and Hamilton Relay to provide telephone re-voicing services to persons with dysarthria and difficult to understand speech;. International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics (IALP Committee chair
Authored or co-authored over 40 articles, four books, and eight clinical materials including The Bridge of Vocabulary, START-IN, Funnel Toward Phonics, and one standardized test- The Montgomery Assessment of Vocabulary Acquisition (MAVA). Editor-in-Chief of Communication Disorders Quarterly Journal.
