Biography

John Nielsen is a third generation Californian, a 1979 graduate of Stanford University, a best-selling author, a working journalist for more than 40 years, and a former Correspondent at National Public Radio, where he specialized in documentary length stories about wild things and places. In his time at NPR he reported from around the world, covering everything from tiger poaching problems in Nepal to highway construction fights in the Peruvian Amazon. In 2005 his coverage of a dolphin die-off in Florida won the American Association of Science's "Best Radio Story" award. In 2006, his book "Condor/To the Brink and Back/The Life and Times of One Giant Bird" won the National Outdoor Book Award for Best Natural History Book. He is the former host of "The Wild Things," a podcast produced by The World Wildlife Fund. His print work has been published in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Orange County Register, Sports Illustrated Magazine and Outside Magazine. He is the proud father of three sons. He lives in Newport Beach.
