Athletic Training has developed several travel courses to give students the opportunity to explore athletic training in international settings that include practice in the skills they are learning at Chapman. Courses have been designed with expectation that every AT student will travel to at least one other country and learn firsthand what the practices are for helping athletes in a variety of sports. Students travel to exciting countries such as Australia and Germany.

Study in Puerto Rico Interterm 2013!

Dr. Anaida Colon-Muniz and Dr. Suanne SooHoo will be leading a travel course to Puerto Rico in January of 2013 for interterm from January 3rd to 25th. This course is an alternate to the Madrid, Spain trip in summer, and addresses similar topics, such as second language acquisition and culture. The three week course will take place in both the cities of San Juan and San German, both established in the 1500s. They are two of the oldest cities in the United States.

Study in Spain

The travel courses to Madrid, Spain are an opportunity during the summer to spend between three and four weeks in the exciting and dynamic country of Spain, while completing one of several courses on second language acquisition that are required for the elementary or secondary teaching credential.  Students may also participate at the graduate level and take the class as an elective. Classes are held in the bustling center of Madrid during the morning, followed by opportunities to become immersed in the many cultural venues that familiarize students with the day to day experiences of Spanish life. In this way, there are multiple opportunities to experience second language and culture immersion. Students reside in Spanish homes to have firsthand experiences with the Spanish way of life.  School visits and tours to other parts of Spain and Europe are facilitated through the program. The course is offered each summer if at least 10 students register. It is cross-listed for both graduate and undergraduate students as EDUC 635/501/402.

Students will go to the markets and local shops, walk over 500 year old cobblestones and come make this amazing city that has influenced art and western civilization their own. Students will see Dante Alligheri's home and church, Michelangelo's David-who symbolized the freedom of Florence's struggling and proud Republic-and Brunelleschi's amazing freestanding dome, an architectural wonder. There is so much more!

Study in Mexico

The College of Educational Studies engaged in some preliminary work to establish a formal relationship with the Escuela Normal Nacional en Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. As part of this effort faculty members have continued to nurture those relationships in the hope that we can establish student opportunities for travel experiences.

The graduate programs in Counseling and School Psychology have sponsored short term travel courses to Guatemala and Cambodia and Vietnam.  For CSP students, these travel courses substitute for CSP 514 - Cultural and Community issues in counseling and school psychology. Consortium to Advance School Psychology in Vietnam (CASP-V)

CSP faculty members Michael Hass, Kelly Kennedy and Jeanne Anne Carriere are active members of the Consortium to Advance School Psychology in Vietnam (CASP-V).  The mission of the Consortium for the Advancement of School Psychology in Vietnam or CASP-V is to establish the discipline and profession of School Psychology in Vietnam by working collaboratively to promote the highest quality educational standards and applied practices in school psychology.

CASP-V is unique in that it is the first multilateral collaboration in education between the USA and Vietnam.  CASP-V has four focus areas: 1) Collaboratively building capacity at Vietnamese institutions of higher education to offer high quality educational programs in School Psychology, 2) Offering professional development program and co-sponsoring conferences that will build the capacity of practitioners and enhance multi-lateral cooperation, 3) Assist in the establishment of School Psychology Service Centers that will provide direct services to children and families in Vietnam, 4) Conduct collaborative research on topics important to School Psychology.

CASP V has sponsored two international conferences and is currently planning a third for the summer of 2012.  CASP V has also conducted a series of three professional development workshops in Vietnam for Vietnamese academics, practitioners and students.  Dr. Michael Hass, Chapman Professor and Co-chair of CASP-V's Board of Executives, is collaborating with Long Beach Unified School District School Psychologist and Chapman Adjunct Faculty member, Dr. Phuong Le, on a research project titled "Risks and Protective Factors among Vietnamese Youth."
