Chapman University’s Facilities Management Department is responsible for creating an energy efficient and environmentally sustainable campus through the development and implementation of energy conservation practices and programs. While Facilities Management has been given the responsibility to “lead the charge” in energy reduction strategies, ultimate success will be dependent on how we, as individuals, use energy. Working together as a campus community, we can reduce our environmental footprint.

  • The gym located in Henley Hall's basement now houses state of the art equipment from SportsArt. The SportsArt equipment allows the exerciser to not only work up a sweat, but to produce electricity that is fed back into the electric grid of the building. There are many benefits to the addition of these machines:

  • Chapman University currently has submetering installed in four of the seven residence halls on campus. Henley Hall boast the university's Eco-Gym, the Chapman Radio Station, a movie room, snack bar, and lounge area. Glass Hall contains both dorms and apartments, spread out among four floors. Each floor of Glass has trash and recycling facilities. The Davis Apartments are separated into five three-story buildings. They all face a grassy quad, which is where the Community Garden is located. Read more about the Community Garden here. These apartments have trash and recycling facilities located outside the buildings.

    From September 22nd- October 17th, all the residence halls participated in the Eco-Olympics competition to reduce their water and energy use. Each and every hall was able to reduce both their water and energy consumption! By the end of the competition, Pralle-Sodaro hall was able to reduce their energy use by the greatest percentage and the Harris Apartments along with North and South Morlan reduced their water use by the greatest percentage.   • Chapman University has revitalized many historic buildings in Old Towne Orange and now uses them for instruction, office space, research areas, and housing. Four of these such buildings make up the historic core of the campus: Reeves Hall, Roosevelt Hall, Memorial Hall, and Smith Hall.

  • After noticing that electricity for Marion Knott Studios (MKS) exceeded the allowable demand three times in a one year period, it was time to find an efficient way to bring electricity consumption and cost down, and hopefully increase occupant comfort. In the summer of 2013, a retro-commissioning project was started to help us achieve those goals. The Rx program primarily included looking at mechanical systems in the building to ensure that everything was in working condition. The project also involved evaluating the current building automation system sequence to verify that the building was operating as it was designed. Following the conclusion of the project, data was collected and analyzed. The first quarters (Q1) of both the 2012 and 2013 fiscal years were compared. The results were very encouraging and proved successful in meeting the efficiency goals.

    Soon after finishing the electricity work, other efforts were made to decrease the amount of gas consumed by Marion Knott Studios. To accomplish this, a bypass was installed on the boiler. The results show that this investment was very effective in reducing both gas usage and cost. Some of these results are displayed in the chart below.

      • Table displaying gas percent changesAs you can see in this chart, when usage and cost from 2012-2013 increased from the previous year, the year in which the bypass was installed shows a dramatic decrease in both cost and usage from the year before it.
