Every other year, Chapman conducts the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI), a nationally recognized survey developed to assess student satisfaction and the importance of campus issues to students. Every year, parking is one of the least satisfied areas with the largest performance gap.  These chapters researched technology-based solutions to increase parking efficiency thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the funding and capacity of Chapman to invest in sustainable alternatives, which will reduce parking congestion and clear the air.

    • Student satisfaction plays a key role in determining what needs to be focused on at Chapman University. Every time the survey is conducted, parking is one of the least satisfied areas with the largest performance gap. Satisfaction is rated on a scale of 1 (“not satisfied at all”) to 7 (“very satisfied”).

    • The performance gap score is the mean score difference between student satisfaction and level of importance. A large performance gap score for an item indicates that the institution is not meeting the students’ expectations.

     

    • CU Parking App
    • Chapman University currently has a parking app that tells you how many spaces are unoccupied in the Lastinger, Barrera, and West Campus parking structures.

    • Figure 7: Pop up message on the parking app if parking is about to fill up and students are located within a mile of campus.
    • If location services or GPS recognizes that a student is within a mile of campus, a message could pop saying, “Parking will be full in 10 minutes. Click for alternatives options!”  Under this message, students can click for information about the panther shuttle, rideshare programs, and how long it will take to skateboard/bike or walk.
    • A Chapman student has already made his own app for Chapman that shows trends of parking availability. The student has expressed the ability to make edits and for Chapman to fully adapt this version.

    • The costs total up to roughly $10.61 a square foot per year
    • Maintenance costs vary from structure to structure depending on what features it contains for Westcampus and Lastinger:

    • Costs of land parcels where parking structures sit
    • Above ground structures limit the use of the land for just a structure and create sunk costs.
    • Prime locations are turned into parking

    Chapman University undergraduate student population from 2002 until 2011; Chapman’s admission rates have grown since 2011 and will continue to grow until they are capped at just over 11,600 in the 2020’s. Many of these students will live close to campus, and many will be housed in the new Panther Village Dorms, and at their own residences.

    Programs that Chapman can begin:

    A strong PR and Advertising campaign to improve student familiarity with existing options: many students are unaware of existing programs, and the most well-known transit incentive program is that of the Carpool Permit. Chapman can significantly improve its existing education and publicization of opportunities.

     

  • Biking (Chapman could also develop more bike paths near and around campus to facilitate local bike usage)

    Ridesharing (Chapman could develop a university-wide uber-type rideshare program (or other type of program) to incentivize carpooling and to disincentivize car commutes.)
