The practice of risk management and the job of the Risk Manager are to help protect the University both internally and externally from things that threaten its integrity. That includes the property, the assets, and the people. The Risk Manager applies the risk management model of risk identification, assessment, measurement, mitigation and monitoring. The work of the Risk Manager is essential to our ongoing success and is thus a vital University function.

Chapman University is committed to developing and administering a comprehensive and professional risk management program for the entire University community. The University is a longstanding member of the University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA.) The mission of this 523 member professional association is to promote the advancement and application of effective risk management principles and practices in institutions of higher education.

+-Risky Business Week

Risky Business: A Week Focusing on Risk Management's Contributions to Higher Education is November 5-9, 2012. Risky Business week is a new campaign of the University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) to raise awareness of the institutional value of today's higher education risk managers, enabling our institution to meet its mission today and well into the future.

Today's higher education risk managers operate on campus in a wide variety of capacities:

Risk managers provide support and consultation to staff and faculty on a wide range of matters that impact the financial health and well-being of the university community.
We bring risk management expertise to students, faculty, and staff as they plan campus activities and events.
We view risk holistically, proactively, and responsively when seeking ways to protect our students, guests, and employees; our institution’s reputation; and our financial resources.
We are committed to campus safety.
We are strategic and practical, and we like to look at the “big picture.”

At Chapman University the Risk Management Office works to identify and prevent risks, including a wide array of issues ranging from Student Life to Faculty Field Trips to Foreign Travel to the purchase of insurance to limit the financial liabilities of the University.
