Since 2009, the Attallah College graduate programs in Counseling and School Psychology (CSP) have sponsored seven short-term (two to three week) travel courses to Cambodia, Cuba, Guatemala, South Africa, and Vietnam.
These courses reflect our commitment to the appreciation of human diversity and our commitment to social justice. We believe that counselors and psychologists have a moral and ethical responsibility to prepare themselves to collaborate effectively with children and parents whose worldviews and cultural backgrounds are different from our own. To this end, we have chosen to travel to countries that have complicated histories and relationships with the United States. They also represent nations with large immigrant populations in Southern California that our students are likely to work with. For CSP students, these travel courses substitute for CSP 514: Cultural and Community Issues in Counseling and School Psychology.
The Attallah College CSP programs are especially proud of our work in Vietnam. CSP faculty and students have traveled to Vietnam nine times to present at conferences, conduct research, and collaborate with Vietnamese faculty and students. In 2015, CSP faculty member Michael Hass traveled to Hanoi, Vietnam as a Fulbright Specialist to work with students and faculty members at the Vietnam National University, University of Education, where he is now a Visiting Professor. Drs. Kelly Kennedy and Jeanne Anne Carriere have also traveled extensively in Vietnam to work with students and faculty in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City.
Please contact Dr. Kelly Kennedy or visit Chapman's Center for Global Education to inquire about upcoming opportunities.
