Research Opportunities

» Research Opportunities

Gaining research experience while an undergraduate has numerous benefits for your college experience and post-college success. That’s why we encourage all students to make it a key part of their time at Chapman.

No matter what your major is, you’ll have opportunities to participate in research by joining faculty-led projects or even leading your own.

Academic Research Projects

Research is part of the academic experience in many programs. It can include everything from class projects to internships to capstone experiences.

As you look at various majors and schools/colleges at Chapman, take a look at what opportunities are available and how they align with your interests and goals.

Grand Challenges Initiative

The Grand Challenges Initiative (GCI) is a unique two-year project that is part of the curriculum for all incoming first-year students in the Schmid College of Science and Technology and Fowler School of Engineering (though every Chapman student is eligible to join).

You’ll work in a small team of 4-6 students and one research mentor to take on one of our most pressing problems, from reversing climate change to improving data security to developing new health technology — and many more.

You can learn more on our Grand Challenges Initiative website.

Faculty-Led Research Projects

At Chapman, you will have a number of opportunities to work alongside your professors and mentors and get real research experience.

Currently, nearly 30% of Chapman undergrads join a faculty-led research project. If you can find a faculty member with a project you’re interested in, feel free to reach out and ask if there are opportunities to join!

Facilities

We believe cutting-edge research takes state-of-the-art (and state-of-the-science!) facilities. That's why we're dedicated to providing the tools and tech our students need to make great research happen.

At Chapman, you'll have access to the Keck Center for Science and Engineering and the Swenson Family Hall of Engineering, both built from the ground up to facilitate student research on the front lines of STEM fields.

Check out our mini-sites to learn more about each facility:

Center for Undergraduate Excellence

Our Center for Undergraduate Excellence facilitates and promotes student research, scholarships and creative activities. This includes scholarships, events, workshops and mentoring opportunities. You can visit their website to learn more about:

Steven Trinh ‘22
Applied Human Physiology Major
During his time at Chapman, Steven Trinh didn't just accomplish groundbreaking research on reversing diabetes-associated blindness; he also paid it forward in the local community by helping underserved students get access to hands-on STEM experience.
