Art Lecture Series

Art Lecture SeriesIn keeping with the Chapman Art Department's mission to further its students' understanding of visual culture, the Visual Arts Thinkers Series was designed as a series of bi-monthly lectures featuring distinguished artists, graphic designers and art historians. This unique series aims to intellectually stimulate undergraduate students to think innovatively about the interdisciplinarity of creativity, inspiration and the practice of art, thus perfectly satisfying the university's emphasis on research and teaching.

John Fowles Center for Creative Writing Series

John Fowles Center for Creative Writing Series

The Center offers students and non-students alike an opportunity to gain a greater appreciation for the "written word" and those who write it. Each year a distinguished group of national and international writers is invited to Chapman University, making these writers available not only to the Chapman community, but to the Orange County and, by extension, the Southern California community as well.

Now into its second decade, The John Fowles Center for Creative Writing has invited to Chapman such national and international writers as: Salman Rushdie, Luisa Valenzuela, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gioconda Belli, Alicia Partnoy, Raymond Federman, Steve Katz, Ronald Sukenick, Raúl Zurita, Elizabeth George, Ralph Berry, David Matlin, Charles Bernstein, Larry McCaffery, Alicia Kozameh, Fanny Howe, David Antin, and Willis Barnstone.

Chapman University's academic program for students is augmented by an exceptional co-curricular program, including The "1939" Club Lecture Series, the Schwartz Holocaust Lecture Series, and The "1939" Club's Leopold Page Memorial Righteous Rescuers Lecture Series.  These lectures bring to Chapman distinguished scholars, innovative film makers, and inspiring survivors and rescuers of the Holocaust, as well as those who are voices for justice and human rights in our world today.

Recent speakers have included "Righteous Among the Nations' Marion von Binsbergen Pritchard; Paul Rusesabagina, whose story was recounted in the film Hotel Rwanda; film makers Daniel Anker; Jon Avnet, Jon Kean, and Pierra Sauvage; Holocaust survivors and witnesses Thomas Blatt, Gerda Weissmann Klein, Curt Lowens, and Leon Leyson, and scholars Dr. Christopher Browning, Dr. Debórah Dwork, Dr. Nechama Tec and Sir Martin Gilbert, among many others. These events are open to the community without charge.

Tabula Poetica Poetry/Reading Series

Tabula Poetica Poetry/Reading Series

Tabula Poetica: The Center for Poetry at Chapman University is dedicated to creating an environment to celebrate poetry in a variety of forms and venues. Here, we foster a culture of poetry appreciation by engaging and supporting the veteran writer, the novice poet, the student, and the general reader in an effort to share poems and conversation about this art form.

Chapman University's poetry project melds the ideas of tabula rasa (or the blank slate) and ars poetica (or the art of poetry) to make a poetry table around which we, near or far, can gather. There exists much poetry already in the world, many poems have yet to be written, and we have a great deal to discuss and question about the nature of poetry. We have been trying to figure out what constitutes this art form since at least the days of Horace, which leads us to believe that the celebration and conversation are more important than reaching a firm conclusion. Tabula Poetica is the slate upon which we've decided to enter the ongoing, larger cultural conversation about poems and their roles. Pull your chair up to our poetry table to enjoy the feast and the discussion here.
