1984, East Berlin: The fall of the Berlin Wall is nowhere in sight. A secret police force with more than 100,000 informants controls the East German population. When Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muehe), a wiretapping expert, is ordered to spy on Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch, "Black Book") to determine whether the celebrated writer expresses views against the totalitarian regime, it is just another assignment, although a high-profile one. However, during hours of overheard conversations between Dreyman, his artist friends and his beautiful lover, actress Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck, "Mostly Martha"), Wiesler finds himself growing fascinated by Dreymanıs life. His indirect participation in this world of art, literature and freethinking makes him aware of the shortfalls of his own existence and begins to challenge his deepest beliefs.

Michael Ballaschk, filmaker and Chapman alumnus, will give a short introduction to the movie and talk about his personal experiences growing up in the GDR.
