What makes Chapman University unique to you?

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
Coming from out of state, I was not sure how my experience at Chapman would be. I was very homesick during my first month at Chapman. I learned that to overcome this homesickness, you MUST get involved. Yes, the first few months are going to be difficult, but you have to push through it by meeting new friends and getting involved. You won't help yourself by just sitting in your dorm room all day. Go outside, enjoy Southern California, make some new friends, and be proud that you are a Chapman student!

When I arrived, Chapman welcomed me with open arms, and since then has become my home away from home.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Chapman is a small and personable school filled with familiar faces and friends, yet has all the benefits of a large school too. What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Hands down, the people. I have been so lucky to work alongside amazing students and faculty that I never would have had the chance to get to know at any other university. Chapman is full of genuinely friendly and kind people who have helped me grow as an individual. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

This past year I was fortunate enough to be a part of Chapman Global Medical Brigades! I am so passionate about serving and helping others!

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
The professors here at Chapman are absolutely amazing. They genuinely want you to learn and come to them for help. When they tell you to visit them in their office hours, they really mean it. Office hours and personal time with your professors are not something to be intimidated by but instead are a wonderful opportunity to form a great relationship with a possible mentor/guide.

Describe Orientation in 5 words or less:
Bonding, exciting, friendships, unique, exhilarating

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Chapman University is unique to me because of the close community we have here. Coming in as a freshman from abroad, I was nervous to start school, but Chapman made me feel so welcome and invited. The community we have here is one that includes everyone and allows everyone to have the best possible college experience.

Share an interesting fact about yourself:
I'm not sure if this qualifies as interesting, but I am absolutely obsessed with penguins!

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
I wish I realized that everyone was in the same boat as me as a new student. I've never been the new student before, so I was worried about being able to put myself out there and meet lots of people. However, once I arrived at Chapman I realized that everyone was eager to make new friends and experience new things. Everyone is starting fresh and that is an important thing to keep in mind as you start your college life!

andy

Ben McClaughry

Major: Business Administration

Year: Sophomore

Describe Orientation in 5 words or less:
Welcoming, engaging, community, unforgettable, adventurous

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
What makes Chapman unique for me is the fact that the campus is so diverse, and yet I feel like we are all a small community. On your way to class, you will see professors, fellow students, brothers and sisters in fraternities and sororities, and you will have the ability to meet and get to know them easily. This is something that has taught me to be thankful to attend such a great school. At Chapman, we are all in it together, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Share an interesting fact about yourself:
Sports are my life. I especially love basketball and am even close friends with the star point-guard of the Houston Rockets, Jeremy Lin.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
I wish I was aware of the wealth of opportunities available to get involved on campus from day one at Chapman. Every day, there are events readily available on campus in which one can get involved and meet people. It took me a semester at Chapman to realize how easy it is to get involved.

brandon

Brandon Tracey

Majors: Business Administration, Strategic and Corporate Communication

Year: Senior

Describe Orientation in 5 words or less:
Outstanding, Engaging, Unique, Impactful, FUN!

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
I think one thing that makes Chapman unique is how small and close-knit the entire community is. The level of interaction that students have with any and all faculty, staff, and administration is something that is not easily found at other organizations, let alone a university. It makes the experience much more personalized, friendly, and fun for everyone within Chapman.

Share an interesting fact about yourself:
I have a fraternal twin brother who goes to Northern Arizona University. It is funny when I tell people this because not many people know about him and even when they see a picture of him, they don't believe me because he doesn't look like me. When we were younger, people would sometimes get us mixed up, but nowadays people can barely believe we are related.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
Recently, I began employment on campus at the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship at Chapman. This is an incredible department on campus that provides numerous resources for aspiring entrepreneurs. I wish I had known about this department as a new student because if I was aware, I could have learned more about entrepreneurship earlier and encouraged my friends with business ideas to pursue them with the talented individuals at the center.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Chapman is an amazing institution that brings together the perfect blend of academic and social life. Academically, I love my small classes, the fact that my teachers know my name, and how there are no TA's. Socially, I always say that on the way to class I see 15 people I do know, and 50 people I don't know. Chapman is the perfect size for me; large enough to be diverse, but small enough to find my niche. And Disneyland is right around the corner!

I wish I knew sooner how many incredible connections there are at the career center. Even as a freshman, the Career Development Center helped me critique my resume and they also connected me to prestigious corporations. The career fairs are an amazing opportunity and more students should take advantage of talking to company representatives.

Chapman is an awesome blend of unique and driven students. Geared with resources and a staff that goes the extra mile and then one more for their students, Chapman ensures that all students have the tools to go forth and confidently pursue their passions whatever they may be. I have felt enormous personal growth through the opportunities Chapman has fostered in my first year alone, so I can’t wait to continue the Chapman experience.

I grew up in Seattle, Washington and love the Pacific Northwest. I write songs and try to exercise and stay outside as much as possible! I’ve been compared to a young Bobby Flay behind the grill.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
I wish I would have known more immediately that Chapman has the resources to help you succeed, but as a student, YOU are responsible for utilizing these resources. So if you have a question, go out and get the answer! If a program interests you, sign up for it! The only limitations here on campus are the ones we place on ourselves, so make the most of your time here at Chapman.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
There's a lot of things that I wish I knew as a new student, such as what time the cafeteria was open for dinner on weekends, but the most important thing that looking back I wish I had known is the value of being involved. With so many wonderful opportunities to get involved offered here, many of which are unique to Chapman, there is an organization for every interest. Make sure to visit the Student Involvement fair and browse OrgSync to find more out more about what's offered on campus. There's also usually free food at the Student Involvement Fair, so at least go for that.

The following reasons are why I love Chapman (in no particular order): hands-on learning regardless of your major, Interterm, the people I have met that ultimately became my family away from home, the fact that we are geographically close to so many cool places, and the food in the circle, specifically, the cinnamon knots at Zito’s.

Chapman University is a school that prides itself on many things – great education, close community, amazing athletics, and a place where students have endless opportunities waiting for them. I wish I knew that Chapman's packaging hours are quite strange and that their system takes a while to process everything. So if you live across country like me, make sure if you are receiving a package to know the hours and to not get frustrated with the workers when it's not ready to be picked up, it's not their fault!

When reflecting on my Chapman experience so far, I have been blessed to have so many amazing opportunities. However, there have been moments when I did not prioritize in the best manner. I was spreading myself too thin and burning the candle at both ends. Looking back, I realize how it is important to be more flexible. For me, it is not always about how many things I am a part of, rather it is the depth to which I am involved that is important.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
I really believe in Chapman’s Window of Opportunity. Looking back on the past three years, I have accomplished more than I ever thought I was capable of, and I have Chapman to thank for that. It has provided me with amazing opportunities that have helped me grow into the person I am today. Whatever you want to get involved in or experience, Chapman has an outlet for it. The opportunities are endless!

When I put on a cowboy hat, ripped jeans, and heavy eye liner I look just like Bret Michaels, the lead singer of the 80s rock band Poison and MTV’s show Rock of Love. So much so, that I competed in a beauty pageant held on campus by one of the fraternities last year, and for my talent portion, I came out dressed like Bret and sang the Poison song “Every Rose Has Its Thorn." As Bret would say--Live Fast, Ride Free, and Rock Hard!

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
Adjusting to college takes time. It is a big transition to go from living at home your whole life to living on your own and being in control of your college career. I was expecting to come in and meet my life-long friends first thing and get super involved on campus, but it was a much slower process. It takes time to know people and find your place at school. If you are patient and put yourself out there, it will all fall into place, and you will have an amazing time in college.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Chapman is a very unique school that specializes in so many different areas of expertise. We are not dominated entirely by sports, arts, or Greek life. Instead, every niche within Chapman is equally important to the core values of our University. For me, it's the perfect size and the perfect community. One where I can have relationships with my classmates, professors and the campus as a whole. I can't imagine being anywhere else.

An experience unlike any other

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Chapman is unique because the small size allows for the fostering of incredibly close relationships, something that might not be possible at a larger school. Chapman is also incredibly diverse and offers something for everyone: whether that’s a club, sport or Greek affiliation, it’s easy to find your niche. The community here is a very open and accepting one, and allows for each and every person to let their true colors shine through.

Share an interesting fact about yourself:
I have competed and medaled in dance in the “Maccabi Games," an Olympic type sports competition for Jewish teenagers throughout the country.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
As a new student, I wish I knew that I needed to put into this experience what I wanted to get out of it. Basically, “you get what you give.” Coming in to Chapman, I didn’t know a single person, and I had never lived away from home. It was a very overwhelming and slightly scary experience for me, and because of that I tended to be a bit shy during Orientation Week, and the first few weeks of school. But the more time that went by, the more I realized that this was not benefiting me in any way. Once I started making more of an effort, getting to know more people, and getting involved in more things, my experience became a much more positive one. Though it can be hard at first, simply putting yourself out there, and reaching out will get you far and will allow for you to have the college experience you’ve always dreamed of.

Though I am an avid filmmaker, I love to spend my free time outdoors throwing the Frisbee, kicking the soccer ball around, or just hanging out. I do my best to balance the solitary hours I spend in the editing lab with just as many hours spent with other people enjoying beautiful days outdoors.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:         I wish that I had known to get on a student film set as early as possible! Luckily, I worked on my first Senior Thesis as a boom operator within a month of starting school; but that was a result of accidentally bumping into the director of that thesis during Orientation week. Film students, non-film students, everyone... go on set early! Chapman University has an amazing film school and everyone should check it out at some point in their undergraduate career! That being said, everyone should check out all of the arts at Chapman. I have been to countless Chamber Orchestra, Opera, and Theater performances on campus over the years and I couldn't be more grateful for the talented group of individuals I am surrounded by at Chapman.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
I have developed my closest friendships at Chapman because I'm surrounded by so many other people as driven and passionate as I am about their areas of interest. This could easily foster competition between peers, but instead Chapman creates an environment built around collaboration - everyone is here to succeed, but also to help their peers reach great heights as well. The balance of leading and learning from peers is wholly unique to Chapman.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?
Chapman’s uniqueness for me is simply a feeling. It was the feeling I had the first time I walked on campus in high school that screamed, “This is home.” It was the feeling I had when I got out of my car the first day of orientation and three people rushed over to help me unload my bags. It was the feeling I had after my first week of classes, and all my teachers knew my name. Chapman is not just an institution; it is a home – full of family, friends, and personal education.

Share an interesting fact about yourself:
Last January, I traveled down the entire country of New Zealand in a camper van. We drove all day, and then pulled over next to beautiful beaches, mountains, glaciers, and valleys to sleep in the back of the van at night. It was the most amazing adventure that taught me the meaning of true natural beauty.

Share something you wish you knew, but did not know, as a new student:
I wish I knew that everyone else was going through the same things as me. After the first week, I felt like everyone already had friends, knew the entire campus, and had gained independence away from their parents and support system at home.  After walking into the wrong classroom my second day of school, I called home in tears. However, that night I had a long conversation with a classmate in my hall, and we realized that we were feeling the same thing! College is exciting and fun, but also a bit intimidating and scary at first. What it is important to know is that you are not going through it alone. All other first-years are figuring it out one day at a time, just like you.

What makes Chapman University unique to you?

Chapman University reminds me of my high school. I'm from a very small town with one public high school. The faculty, staff, and students were all very close and built an amazing community. Chapman has that too. Chapman is a community where the president will be pied in the face in the name of philanthropy, where nearly any student will stop and help you if you look lost, and is one that has fostered the leaders I've come to know and love. Chapman welcomes everyone with open arms, and all you need to do is embrace it.

The advice that I find the most useful about Chapman is that Chapman loves to help, you just need to ask for it. Often we assume that the university understands we're having issues, but are too afraid to bother someone about it. Chapman has proven to me time and time again that when you ask for help, people will jump through hoops to find a solution. So send that e-mail, make that call, or ask an OA, because in the end it will be worth it.

It is okay to have that relationship, sometimes it's even better.
