Safe Space is a multi-faceted educational intervention supported by the division of Student Affairs that supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and ally (LGBTQIA) campus community members. The program impacts Chapman University both environmentally and culturally through its commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all LGBTQIA community members.

Chapman Safe Space members publicly display their support for the LGBTQIA community. They also designate given areas or offices as “safe spaces” and provide a listening ear and support for LGBTQIA community members who are dealing with issues related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity/gender expression.

    Safe Space Trainings
    The initial two and a half hour Safe Space Training is an introductory workshop which works to assist individuals who wish to become identified allies on campus in exploring and increasing their own awareness and knowledge of the LGBTQIA community and its history. It provides information and resources to assist allies in acting within the Chapman community. It consists of:
    • Definitions, terms, and symbols
    • Experiences from LGBTQIA students about campus climate
    • LGB identity development
    • Ways to be a visible ally
    • Resources for the LGBTQIA and ally communities

    Allies 101 Workshops
    Aspiring allies who want to start with foundational information about LGBTQIA identities in a brief and personally relevant format may want to attend an Allies 101 workshop. Allies 101 workshops give participants opportunities to consider how homophobia and heterosexism operate within the campus community, learn relevant language, and terminology associated with LGBTQIA communities. Current workshops include the following and can be provided upon request:

    • Greek Life LGBT 101
    • LGBTQIA 101

    Safe Space Advanced
    Additional dialogues for Safe Space Allies who have already been through the initial Safe Space Training are offered throughout the academic year depending upon trainer availability to further develop allies in their awareness, skills and abilities to understand and support LGBTQIA community members. Some possible areas for Safe Space Advanced dialogues include:

    • Train the Trainers
    • Gender Identity & Expression
    • Bisexual, Pansexual, No Label At All?
    • Advocacy & Activism
    • Ally Support During 'Coming Out' Processes
    • Local, Regional, & National Resources
