»University Vocabulary

Before we get started, you should become familiar with the language of the University. The following are some terms that will be used frequently throughout this tutorial, and their definitions.

+-Baccalaureate Degree

A baccalaureate degree is one that is awarded by a four-year college or university. Chapman awards the following baccalaureate degrees:
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.)
  • Bachelor of Music (B.M.)

+-Class Standing

Undergraduate students are classified as the following:
  • Freshman (0-29 units earned)
  • Sophomore (30-59 units earned)
  • Junior (60-89 units earned)
  • Senior (90+ units earned)

+-Credits or Units

Credits or units are the numeric value given to a class, and indicate the number of hours spent in a class per week. Typically, one credit equals one hour in class. If a class is 3 credits, you can expect to spend 3 hours per week in that class.

Most classes are 3 credits, but there are some exceptions. Physical activity courses are usually .5-1 credit; science courses with a lab are usually 4 credits; music and dance classes can be 1-2 credits.

+-Lower Division or Upper Division

These terms refer to the course number. Courses numbered 100-299 are considered lower division, and they are appropriate courses to take in your freshman and sophomore years. Upper division courses are numbered 300-499, and should be reserved for your junior and senior years.

WebAdvisor will not allow freshmen to register for upper division courses.

Transfer students who have earned 30+ credits prior to matriculation at Chapman will be allowed to register for 300 level courses.

+-Prerequisite

A prerequisite is a course that must be completed prior to enrolling in another course. You can find the course prerequisites on WebAdvisor or in the University catalog.
