Your degree requirements include completion of Preparatory Skills in Mathematics (MATH 098 and 099). These courses must be completed in your first year at Chapman University, or you will be subject to administrative probation.
These Preparatory Skills courses are waived by completing one of the following:
- A score of 500 or higher on the mathematics portion of the SAT
- A score of 21 or higher on the mathematics portion of the ACT
- A passing score (4 or higher) on any of the math AP exams
- A passing score on any of the math HL IB exams
- Completion of a "transferable" college math course above intermediate algebra, prior to matriculation at Chapman
If none of the above applies to you, then you are required to take Chapman's math placement exam . By achieving a passing score (24 or higher on the algebra placement test), you will place into Math 104 (pre-calculus), and the Preparatory Skills requirement will be complete. If you are required to take the math placement test, you will have a registration hold placed on your account that cannot be lifted until you complete the test. You can only take the test once, so we strongly encourage you to take the online orientation and the practice test prior to beginning the actual exam. Practice tests can be taken multiple times.
If you're not sure that you meet any of the above qualifications, you can check your program evaluation. If you have met the Preparatory Skills requirement, you will see a "C" for complete next to the requirement.

If you are required to take Math 098 and/or 099, you will see an "N" next to the requirement for "not yet started." If you see an "N" on your program evaluation, you must complete the algebra exam.
If you do not pass the math placement exam, you MUST enroll in Math 098 or Math 099 (depending on your actual score) in your first semester at Chapman. If you are not enrolled in the appropriate course, you will be force registered for the course, and you will not be allowed to drop it.
MATH 98/99 CREDITS DO NOT COUNT TOWARD THE 124 CREDITS REQUIRED FOR GRADUATION AND ARE GRADED ON A PASS/NO PASS BASIS.
