» Academic Advising for New Students

Whether you're a new freshman or transfer student, we would like to welcome you to Chapman University! The Academic Advising Center is committed to assisting you throughout your time at Chapman. Our mission is to coordinate and support an advising program that consistently provides students with the information and counsel they need to develop sound educational goals, and make effective decisions regarding the University courses and programs that will enable them to realize those goals.

Chapman University offers a variety of academic advising services to support your academic planning, assist with registration, and address your individual interests and needs. While each department and office provides its own unique service, we all work together to provide assistance and resources for Chapman students. It is important that you make regular contact with both your professional advisor in the AAC and your program advisor in your major department.

Academic advising for new students entering fall 2016 begins in June. Please continue to check back here for additional information.

New Students entering Fall 2016 can begin registering in mid-July (stay tuned for specific dates).

**Note: Each student will be assigned a specific online registration appointment. Registration appointment times will be listed in each student's Student Center in my.chapman.edu in the box titled "Enrollment Dates" on the right-hand side.

+ - First Semester Advising:

Academic advising for new students begins on June 1. If you have advising questions prior to that date, please contact your Admissions Counselor in the Chapman Office of Admissions.

New students enrolling in fall 2016 have the option of completing in-person advising or online advising.

  • In-person advising for incoming FRESHMEN takes place in group sessions only
  • In-person advising for incoming TRANSFER STUDENTS takes place in individual appointments
  • Online advising (for freshmen and transfer students) is available for students who are not local to the Southern California area and those who are comfortable receiving important information in an electronic environment.

FRESHMEN STUDENTS: All incoming freshmen have an advising hold on their account and must complete MANDATORY academic advising (either online or group workshop) prior to registering for classes.

TRANSFER STUDENTS: Advising for new transfer students is highly recommended. All TRANSFER students are encouraged to come to campus and meet with an advisor in an individual appointment.

+ - In-Person Advising

In-Person Advising takes place on the Chapman University Campus in Orange, CA.

New Freshmen use an online system to RSVP for a group workshop. Workshops take place in June and July. See our New Freshmen page for details and a RSVP link for the workshops (when available).

New Transfers are able to schedule individual appointments. We will begin taking phone calls to schedule appointments in early June (check back for details).

For Transfer Students only:

Step 1: Students must first pay their deposit and be moved to student status (matriculated)

Step 2: Students then must complete our Online New Student Tutorial in full, including the final survey

Step 3: After 24 hours have passed after completing our tutorial, students can call our center at 714-744-7959 to schedule an individual advising appointment (either in person or over the phone). Note that we will begin taking phone calls in early June (check back for details)

Step 4: It is imperative that all students transferring any coursework to Chapman turn in their official transcripts/AP or IB scores to the Registrar as soon as possible.

Visit our Freshmen or Transfer section of this website for more information on advising and registration.

+ - Online Advising

An online tutorial will be available for those students who are out of the local area, or who are comfortable receiving important information in an electronic environment. The tutorial will cover all of the same information as an in-person appointment.  Follow-up phone appointments with an advisor, or email options will be available for students who have additional questions after completion of the tutorial. You will need your Chapman username and password to access the tutorial.

When available, a link will appear below to take students to the Academic Advising Center's Online New Student Tutorial. Students must complete the tutorial in full, including the final survey, in order to have their hold lifted/schedule an appointment.
