March 8 & 9, 2013 – Chapman University, CaliforniaChapman University’s Food Science Student Association welcomes the schools of the Mountain West region for the 28th Annual Area Meeting and College Bowl Competition. Students of the Mountain West will network with each other and recap on their past school year. During the college bowl, schools will compete towards a regional title in a double elimination, food science quiz competition. The winner will compete in the national competition at the IFT Annual Meeting and Expo in Chicago in June 2013.

Schools of the Mountain West are welcomed to a dinner hosted by Chapman University and to recap on their past school year with a 5 minute PowerPoint presentation. Schools do not have to be participants in the College Bowl to attend this meeting and are encouraged to give a presentation. Dinner will be followed by networking opportunities. This meeting will be open only to the students, College Bowl participants, and faculty members of the Mountain West schools.
+-March 9: Mountain West College Bowl Competition
The IFTSA College Bowl Competition is a double-elimination quiz-based tournament between the five schools of the Mountain West that will test the student’s knowledge on a variety of food science topics. The College Bowl will facilitate an exhilarating learning environment and healthy interaction and competition between different schools of the region. The Competition will cover core topics in the Food Science curriculum which may include:
- Food Processing & Engineering
- Food Chemistry, Ingredients, Flavors and Analysis
- Food Microbiology, Safety, and Law
- Sensory Evaluation and Statistics
- Human Nutrition and Health
- Commodity Groups
- Culinology and Molecular Gastronomy
- IFT Trivia and Common Knowledge
The winning team will receive a $1000 travel grant from IFT and advance to the national competition in Chicago in July 2013 to compete against the winners of the other IFTSA regions.
Light breakfast items, refreshments and lunch will be provided to all the attendees. Spaces will be reserved for the Mountain West schools with the remainder of spaces being open to all students, staff, and alumni of the Mountain West schools.
+-After Competition Activities
Participants from the weekend’s festivities are encouraged to attend the Natural Foods Expo West at the Anaheim Convention Center to explore the realm of natural foods and network. A substantial discount to the Natural Foods Expo West through the Southern California Institute of Food Technologists (SCIFTS) and transportation will be offered to the Area Meeting and College Bowl participants. Downtown Disney and Disneyland are also located near the Anaheim Convention center and are about 10-15 minutes from Chapman University. The first 3 hours in designated Downtown Disney lots are free and offers a variety of restaurants and shops. Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventures are two premier theme parks of the Disney company that offers rides and entertainment.
