The Schmid College of Science and Technology is excited to offer a bachelor of science degree in Environmental Science and Policy for students looking to examine the interaction between humanity and its environment. In addition to core course work in the natural and political sciences, students in this degree program specialize in ecology, earth systems, or environmental policy.
Few other institutions in the country offer a degree like this, in which students at the undergraduate level have the opportunity to earn course credit by participating in ongoing environmental research projects and internships with area environmental partners. Additionally, they receive in-depth training in social sciences and policies through the Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Argyros School of Business and Economics.
Our faculty are top researchers in their fields and explore issues ranging from pollution over megacities, the effects of invasive plant species on ecosystem processes, the characterization of heavy metals in mine waste, and the impact of presidential transitions on environmental law. The faculty consider research and the co-authorship of scholarly work with students to be of the utmost importance.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that occupations in environmental science and protection, environmental specialists, and natural science managers will be high-wage, high-growth jobs, with an 18% increase in positions by 2014. Thus, the degree prepares students for careers with agencies responsible for environmental protection and resource use and consulting firms, as well as for graduate studies.
