Awards
Awards are intended to provide support for a variety of clearly defined scholarly or creative projects. Grants typically do not exceed $750, but all reasonable proposals will be considered. Funds may be used for a number of purposes, including (but not limited to):

• The purchase of equipment, materials, or supplies directly related to the project
• Expenses directly related to the project such as test subject remuneration, license fees, or bio-hazardous waste removal
• Travel expenses directly related to the project such as working in an archive or collecting field data

Eligibility
All undergraduate students on the Orange campus are eligible to apply. Students may apply for only one grant each academic year. Undergraduate students may apply in either the fall (for spring semester funding) or the spring (for the following summer and fall semester funding).
 
Deadline
Fall applications must be sent electronically to the OUR by 4:00 PM, November 1st. Fall applications will be carefully considered by the Faculty Research and Development Council. Award recipients will be notified on December 15th.
 
Spring applications must be sent electronically to the OUR by 4:00 PM, April 15th. Spring applications will be carefully considered by the Office of Undergraduate Research. Award recipients will be notified on May 15th.

OUR Travel Grants
Funding is available to support travel to conferences by undergraduate students and faculty mentors. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Funding is provided for travel, lodging, and conference registration fees only. Meals are not covered by OUR.
 
Application Procedure
Requests for travel funds must be made at least six weeks in advance of presentation date and must be electronically emailed to the OUR. Special circumstances will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants are required to seek joint funding from additional sources while applying for OUR funding. Sources include the Student Government Association, departmental/school funding, and the Honors Program. Incomplete applications will be returned for correction.

The Office of Undergraduate Research is pleased to announce the second annual Chapman University Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program.  This will be a great opportunity to have a paid summer fellowship on campus with a faculty member in addition to professional programming, social events, and other activities designated for this group of SURF participants.

We encourage students across all disciplines to start identifying full-time faculty members who are willing to provide them mentorship for this program through the summer. Explore our faculty profiles to get more information on the variety of faculty research interests. The program lasts for 10 weeks during summer 2013 (30 hours research/week expected, June 3-August 9) in which students will be provided a stipend of $3,000 with an opportunity for additional funding of up to $750 to be applied towards research expenses (students must submit a separate research grant proposal for consideration after notification of fellowship). Sponsoring faculty mentors will also be provided a stipend of $1,000. On-campus housing is available for the summer (students will be responsible for all costs).

The selection criteria are based on application materials and letter of collaboration provided by the sponsoring faculty member. Additionally, if your research involves humans or animals, you will need to request Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval. The IRB at Chapman University is an authority that reviews, approves, denies and provides ongoing oversight of research involving human and animal subjects in accordance with FDA regulations. If your research requires IRB approval, you must apply for approval before the SURF application deadline. Proof of submission can be sent by email to our@chapman.edu. Students without prior research experience are encouraged to apply.
