Biography

Dr. Keykavous Parang is currently a full professor at Chapman University School of Pharmacy and Schmid College of Science and Technology in Irvine, California. He earned his Pharm.D. degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 1989. Then he received his Ph.D. in medicinal chemistry from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Alberta, Canada, in 1997, followed by a postdoctoral study in the Department of Chemistry. Dr. Parang pursued additional postdoctoral studies at Rockefeller University in New York and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in bioorganic chemistry. He joined the College of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island in October 2000 and became a full professor in July 2008. He served as the Program Coordinator of the Rhode Island IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (RI-INBRE) NIH program ($20 million, 2012-2013) and coordinated the renewal proposal's writing and submission that was funded in 2014 for additional five years.

Dr. Parang joined Chapman University as the second founding member, assisting in establishing the first Pharmacy school in Orange County, CA. He served as Associate Dean of Research, Graduate Studies, and Global Affairs (June 2013-June 2020) and Associate Dean of Research, Innovation, and Global Affairs (June 2020 -March 2022) at the School of Pharmacy. Dr. Parang has adjunct faculty positions at Brown University. He is also an affiliated faculty at the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, School of Medicine, and a member of Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Irvine. He was a visiting scientist in the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University (2000-2017).

In addition to his contribution to the successful accreditation of the Pharm.D. program at Chapman University, he developed two graduate programs, M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2014) and Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Ph.D. program received WASC accreditation and started in 2016. He also contributed to preparing and getting approval for two other M.S. programs, M.S. in Regulatory Affairs and M.S. in Patient Safety (2019). Moreover, He drafted a proposal for B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2017). The program is planned for the near future at Chapman University. His other leadership contributions include establishing the research infrastructure and core facility and enhancing research activities at Chapman University of School of Pharmacy. The school was ranked 38th among 140 pharmacy schools in the nation, according to the 2021 AACP ranking.

Dr. Parang has shown a successful mentorship and collaborative record during his career. In addition to mentoring many faculty, he has supervised 25 postdoctoral fellows or visiting scientists, 32 graduate students, including 14 Ph.D. students and 18 M.S. students, and 60 undergraduate students.

Dr. Parang serves as an editorial board member or editorial advisory board of several journals. Dr. Parang is a member of the American Chemical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Dr. Parang has received numerous awards and honors, such as the CUSP Culture Award: Diversity and Inclusion (2021), AIMS Award (2021), AACP Catalyst Program (Accelerating Research Leadership, 2017-2018), AACP Catalyst Program Fellowship (2017), AACP Teacher of the Year (2015), Outstanding Intellectual Property Development (URI, 2013), Research Excellence Award (College of Pharmacy, URI, 2012), Outstanding Researcher (URI, 2011), and Honorary Fellow of the Indian Society Chemists and Biologists (ISCB) (2009).

Research Interests

The emphasis of Dr. Parang's research lies on the interface between chemistry and biology, with specific proposals being focused on the fields of medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, nanomedicine, and drug delivery. His research can be described as "applying synthetic organic chemistry to problems in biology". Specific areas currently under investigation include (1) using peptides as cell-penetrating molecular transporters in drug delivery; (2) designing protein kinase inhibitors; (3) developing multifunctional antiviral, anticancer, and antibacterial agents; and (4) designing peptide nanomaterials for nanomedicine.

Dr. Parang's contributions have resulted in 221 peer-reviewed publications, 16 issued or pending patents, and 187 meeting abstracts (May 31, 2022). His laboratory has been funded with $5.48 million from NIH, American Cancer Society, NSF, Industry, USAID-CONRAD, Kay Foundation, and many other funding agencies since October 2000. About $1.8 million of this amount has been received since his arrival at Chapman.

Dr. Parang has been listed among the world's career top 2% of scientists (https://doi.org/10.17632/btchxktzyw.3), as reported by Stanford University (August 01, 2021).
