Biography

Bruce Bales is the director of the CU Early Music Ensemble and the instructor of Medieval/Renaissance Music History. Since 2000 he has regularly given guest lectures and workshops on Renaissance and Baroque music performance practice for Chapman’s music history classes. He recently retired as the Director of Choral, Vocal and Early Music at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, a position he had held since 1992.

He has taught choir, voice classes and co-directed the Collegium Musicum at the University of California, Irvine. He regularly performs both as a baritone soloist and as an early music instrumentalist (playing viols, lutes, cornetto, sackbuts, recorders, crumhorns and hurdy-gurdy). He regularly directs honor choirs, guest lectures, leads workshops and adjudicates festivals throughout Southern California.

In 2006 Dr. Bales was the Artistic Director for the Haut Alps Choral Festival in Gap, France and in 2010 the Huntington Beach Arts Counsel recognized Dr. Bales as their “Arts Educator of the Year.”
