Pam Gibbons has been the Head Athletic Trainer at Chapman University since 1998. In addition to her responsibilities to the athletic department, she serves as a part time faculty member and approved clinical instructor for the athletic training education program (ATEP).
 
Born and raised in Orange Country, Pam attended Orange High School before beginning her athletic training career in 1984 as a student-athlete at Santa Ana College where she was an All-American swimmer. Pam continued her internship at SAC while obtaining her bachelor's degree in physical education and athletic training from California State University,Fullerton. In 1988 she left her position at SAC to become the Head Athletic Trainer at Los Alamitos High School. While at Los Alamitos, Pam had the opportunity to work with the Orange County All Star Football, North Team.
 
Pam graduated from CSUF in 1989 and passed the Board of Certification, Inc. exam that same year. She left Los Alamitos in 1991 to become the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Chapman University.
 
In January 2001 Pam completed her master's degree in education administration from Chapman University. Pam has served the BOC, Inc. as a test site administrator from 1995 to 2007 and as a member of the exam development committee from 1996 to 2007, at which time the certification exam transitioned to computer based testing. Currently, she serves as a BOC exam question writer/validator and mentor.
 
Pam resides in Orange with her daughter Savana.

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Lorena's position at Chapman University is the culmination of many years of studying and pursuing an appointment as an Athletic Trainer at the university level. Lorena joined the athletic training staff at Chapman in August 2006 as an assistant athletic trainer and is also a part-time faculty member and approved clinical instructor within the Athletic Training and Physical Education Department.

Lorena played soccer at the collegiate level for two years at Santa Rosa JC. Upon enrolling at SRJC she fell in love with the profession of athletic training under the guidance of Byron Craighead, the head athletic trainer.

After completing her associate's degree in 2000, Lorena attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where she earned her bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in athletic training in 2002. During her time at Cal Poly, SLO Lorena worked as a student athletic trainer helping with various sports including football, men's soccer, and wrestling. Upon completion of her degree she served as a graduate intern for one year working specifically with the women's basketball team.

Lorena continued her education by attending California State University, Long Beach where she earned her masters degree in kinesiology with an emphasis in sports psychology in 2005. While attending Cal State Long Beach, Lorena worked at CPRx Physical Therapy in Los Alamitos as a Physical Therapy Aide for two years where she gained invaluable experience in rehabilitation.

In addition to her athletic training skills, Lorena also holds her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification and has worked with a strength and conditioning firm that specialized in training high school athletes in proper conditioning techniques to prevent common sport specific injuries.

Her hobbies include virtually all outdoor activities, including cycling, swimming, snowboarding, basketball and soccer. She is currently training for Olympic distance triathlons. Tarnay hails from Mt. Shasta, Calif.

Assistant Athletic Trainer

Trevor joined the athletic training staff at Chapman in August 2006 as an assistant athletic trainer and is also a part-time faculty member and approved clinical instructor within the Athletic Training and Physical Education Department.

Trevor attended San Diego State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training.  At SDSU, Trevor worked with UCSD women's soccer, SDSU football, and women's crew and served as an assistant to the team physician and with the baseball team.  He also completed a summer internship with the San Diego Chargers.

Upon graduating in 2004, Trevor served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Fresno State, working primarily with wrestling, along with football, track, cross country and tennis.  His graduate assistant position also involved teaching duties in the athletic training program, including Introduction to Athletic Training, Therapeutic Modalities, and Evaluation of Athletic Injuries.  After completing his thesis on "Burnout in Graduate Assistants in the College/University Setting," Trevor completed his master's degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Psychology in May 2006.

Trevor is an OC native and grew up in Mission Viejo and Lake Forest, and graduated from El Toro High School.

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Prietto has worked with and operated on many Chapman athletes over the past 15 years.

Dr. Miguel Prietto is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon.  He is a general partner of the Orthopaedic Specialty Institute in Orange County where his practice is focused on sports medicine, arthroscopic and reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery, and knee replacements.

Dr. Prietto has a clinical practice and devotes much of his time to treatment of athletes.  He is team physician for the athletic programs at California State University, Fullerton, Chapman University and Santa Ana College.

Dr. Prietto received a Bachelor of Science degree from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.  He earned his medical degree at the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine, receiving the student Humanitarian Award.  Dr. Prietto did his surgical internship at Los Angeles County – USC Medical Center.  He subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine.  He then traveled to Columbus, Georgia to complete a fellowship in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery at the Hushston Orthopaedic Clinic under direction of James R. Andrews, M.D.

Dr. Prietto is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the California Orthopaedic Association and Western Orthopaedic Association.

Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Shepard is subspecialty trained in sports medicine with special emphasis on the care of the overhead athlete. His clinical expertise includes elbow and shoulder injuries of the overhead athlete, complex knee reconstruction, and cartilage reconstruction.
Dr. Shepard is associate team physician for the University of California Irvine with Carlos Prietto, M.D. He also cares for Chapman University with Miguel Prietto, M.D. Dr. Shepard is the team physician for Santa Ana College and devotes Friday nights to multiple local high school football games.

Dr. Shepard grew up in Tustin and attended Foothill High School. He graduated summa cum laude from U.C. Davis with a degree in biochemistry and was also captain of the football team, an All-American, and the recipient of the Woody Hayes Award as the nation’s top Division II scholar athlete. Dr. Shepard graduated from the UCLA School of Medicine with AOA honors. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at UCLA and completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Basic Science Research at UCLA. Dr. Shepard completed a second fellowship in sports medicine with world renowned Orthopaedic surgeons James R Andrews, M.D. and William Clancy, M.D. at the American Sports Medicine Institute. At ASMI and now at OSI, Dr. Shepard participates in the care of athletes from the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, NCAA, and the PGA/LPGA tours. 

Dr. Shepard is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.  He lectures and teaches about the special needs and care of athletes to Orthopaedic surgical residents, surgeons, therapists, and athletic trainers.

Dr. Shepard’s outside interests include spending time with his wife Colleen, all sports, fly-fishing, paddling, photography, travel, and his English bulldog named Stumpy.

James M. Lally, DO, MMM, President & Chief Medical Officer, Chino Valley Medical Center, is recognized in the local community as a charitable and giving physician, who leads by example. Early to work and late to leave, he serves as a role model to his management and staff as someone willing to “walk the walk”. Board certified in Family Practice, with certificates of added qualification in Sports Medicine and Geriatrics.

Dr. Lally is responsible for the day to day operations of the hospital and also serves as director of medical education for an internship, family practice residency & sports medicine fellowship. He serves as team physician for the USA Shooting Team as well as its President and is Chairman of the Medical Committee of the International Shooting Sports Federation and is a member of the International Olympic Medical Committee. Locally, he oversees the sports medicine programs of the four local high schools in the Chino Valley Unified School District.
 
Dr. Lally is a member of the YMCA Board of Directors and serves as medical director to indigent clinics in Chino andMontclair. He serves on the Board of Trustees for Chino Valley Medical Center and Montclair Hospital Medical Center. He lives with his wife, Diane, and their two children, Joshua James Simmons and Kaitlyn Bai Lally in Upland, California.
 
Dr. Lally is coordinating general medical rotations for Chapman’s senior athletic training students at Chino Valley MedicalCenter and Casa Colina Hopsital.

Adjunct Instructor

Mr. Bauerle is an Orange County native and graduated from Chapman University with a bachelor's degree in 1987 and a master's degree in sports medicine in 1989. He served as Head Athletic Trainer and Head Strength Coach at Chapman from 1989 to 1993 and taught courses in what was then the movement and exercise science department.
 
In 1998 Mr. Bauerle joined the academic faculty in Chapman's department of kinesiology and was appointed as Athletic Training Program Director in 1999. He currently serves an adjunct instructor within the Athletic Training Education Program.
In addition to his sports medicine expertise, Mr. Bauerle is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and has coached numerous professional, collegiate and high school athletes in performance enhancement. An engaging educator, he regularly presents at sports medicine and fitness symposia. Mr. Bauerle also has more than twenty years of progressive healthcare leadership specializing in fostering productive partnerships across various academic, athletic and philanthropic settings.

Mr. Bauerle co-owns Fitness Performance Institute, a comprehensive fitness, sport performance, and physical therapy facility in the city of Anaheim. He resides in Yorba Linda and enjoys an active lifestyle with his wife Kim and their daughters Sierra and Sequoia.
