»Ruebén Martinez Legacy Campaign

Reuben Martinez and studentsDr. Ruebén Martinez, Chapman University Presidential Fellow, honorary doctorate recipient, and public intellectual, has joined the faculty in CES and is actively recruiting first generation students to attend Chapman University.  Ruebén Martinez represents the common person and the notion that common should also mean literate and cultured. He believes art, books, learning, family and community belong to all people and can be enjoyed by all people. Rueben’s life transcends social class and income level, age and gender, politics and ethnicity, borders and limitations.  Ruebén Martinez embodies the American Dream, what one can be when one dreams and strives toward those dreams.  Ruebén Martinez is America at its best.

The creation of The Ruebén Martinez Legacy Campaign Fund is needed to ensure that the spirit, vision and accomplishments of Ruebén Martinez extend to future generations. His legacy centers on creating opportunities for all children and adults to receive the highest quality education, breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy resulting in strong communities benefiting the common good of all people.

  1. The Ruebén Martinez Reading/Reflection Area: An outdoor area selected to honor Rueben’s emphasis on the written and spoken word. This could include a bronze sculpture of Rueben, maybe standing or reading a book (full body), maybe even with a permanent chair next to him inviting others to sit and read and reflect.
  2. Cultural Book and Art Collection & Archive: Book collection and archive items including signed editions. Focus will be a collection of cultural authors of children, youth and adult literature. Art (as defined by Rueben) can be hung in the library as the Rueben Martinez Collection.
  3. The Ruebén Martinez First Generation Scholarship: A scholarship goes to a person who is first generation college student considering a career in an Education related field including working in schools, community related service, and/or entrepreneurial service to the community. Emphasis could be put on transfer students from local community colleges, where a formal transition program could be developed in his name.
  4. Ruebén Martinez Community Fellowship: A graduate student in the College of Educational Studies is provided a fellowship to build connections to our local community. This Ph.D. or Master’s student receives a fellowship (or compensation) to facilitate the connections between Chapman University and the community under the direction of a faculty member who has demonstrated, through their work, a serious commitment to serving the community in the spirit of “Why Honor Rueben Martinez.”  Ruebén Martinez would be the inaugural faculty member directing the student’s activities.
  5. Operational funds to be used for the outlined initiatives, such as books, plaques, sculpture, marketing materials and activities directly related to fundraising and fulfillment of the goals and activities of the Rueben Martinez Legacy Campaign Fund. These expenditures will be at the direction of the dean of the CES to be used in the spirit of the endowment, initially and over time.
