The Donna Ford Attallah Academy for Teaching and Learning (DFAATL) in the College of Educational Studies has defined its mission to engage with our local community to positively impact the educational opportunities students are afforded. The DFAATL identified Orange High School as one of its pillars of emphasis in its civic engagement efforts, and has initiated a partnership to this effect. Although informal engagement activities have been ongoing between Chapman and Orange High School for quite some time, a formalized working agreement was signed in March, 2013 to provide an evaluation of Orange High School’s Freshman Technology Academy (FTA).
The (FTA) is a program initiated by Orange Unified School District to provide iPads to their 9th grade students on a one-to-one basis to enhance their academic achievement and technology preparedness. DFAA Director Keith Howard, Margie Curwen, and Brian Mason will conduct a mixed methods study evaluating the implementation of the FTA program using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The purpose of this research is to identify the optimal configurations, pedagogy, and applications of iPad and other computing tablet technology for improving student learning.
