Title VI of the Higher Education Act of 1965 provides for grants to higher education institutions to establish and operate area studies centers. Many of these centers provide resources that aid pre-collegiate teachers who wish to teach their students about world affairs. In addition to the development and dissemination of instructional materials, many of the centers offer professional development workshops for pre-collegiate teachers. In addition to the Title VI centers, there are a number of programs that also provide instructional materials and in-service training for pre-collegiate teachers. Some of these are funded, in part, by the Freeman Foundation and other private and government funding sources. Others rely solely upon their own institutional funding. The links shown both above and to the left are a listing of the many resources for the teaching of area studies.
