Chapman University Business Plan Competition Presented by Union Bank of California
The Leatherby Center is conducting a Business Idea Contest to search for Chapman University students’ best and most feasible new ideas for businesses. The objectives will be to:
- Provide assistance to new, fast-growth businesses
- Provide a vehicle for matching new businesses with potential investors
- Gain support and recognition from the Orange County business community for students’ entrepreneurial activities
- Identify skilled students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs
Because the Leatherby Center is committed to the educational aspects of the program, even those individuals who do not qualify as a finalist for award prizes will be winners. Experts will provide feedback to all participants. Finalists will be provided mentoring by Tech Coast Angel members. **Finalists will receive a Tech Coast Angels Seed Financing Invitation to be potentially funded up to $1,000,000 in seed financing. Tech Coast Angels is the largest seed financing organization in the United States.

AACSB Accreditation Reaffirmed
On Dec. 18, 2008, the ASBE has achieved reaffirmation of accreditation of its bachelor's and master's degree programs in business administration by recent action of the Board of Directors of AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The official announcement was made December 18, 2008 in Tampa, Florida.

Global Entrepreneurship Week - Various times and locations at Chapman University (Nov. 11-23, 2008)
Join Chapman’s Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics as they kick off the first annual Global Entrepreneurship Week! For one week, millions of young people all around the world will join a growing movement to generate new ideas and seek better ways of doing things. More than 75 countries are coming together to host this week of activities, and Chapman is poised to be the leader. With a “ball drop” in Attallah Piazza counting down to the launch of the week on Sunday November 16th, an international festival of films about entrepreneurs, and talks by famous entrepreneurs, Chapman will host a wealth of activities and events that will inform and inspire you, connecting students, alumni, educators, business leaders, government officials and others in taking action to catalyze an entrepreneurial society.

The George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics Forms Economics Department
Faculty members in The George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics at Chapman University have approved the formation of an Economics Department within The George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics. The intent is to bring greater recognition and visibility to economics as a discipline and to take advantage of a unique opportunity to further integrate economics throughout the programs and research in the School as well as to promote interdisciplinary programs and research across the School and the University.
The Economics Department will promote and support the development of academic programs and research. The Department will work with students, faculty and the external community to facilitate and promote activities in support of economics as it implements its mission and executes its vision and strategy in accordance with the mission of The George L. Argyros School of Business and Economics.
Dr. Donald R. Booth, holder of the Larry Parlett Professorship in Economics, will serve as the first coordinator of the Economics Department. He will work in cooperation with the Dean and the faculty to advance economics education and research in a collaborative environment. Dr. Booth is celebrating his 50th anniversary as a member of the faculty.

Chapman University SIFE Team Receives 1st Runner Up Award in 2008 Regional Competition
Chapman University's SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) team finished first runner-up in the 2008 SIFE Regional Competition held in Los Angeles on Monday, April 7, 2008. Congratulations go to Briana Crider, Chapman University SIFE President and to her officers as they won the 1st Runner Up Award. Our Chapman team finished behind La Sierra University in our league of competition - La Sierra was a tough competitor as they finished first globally out of all SIFE teams worldwide in 2007.

ASBE Student recoginzed with a scholarship
Domenic Donato was recently awarded the second place scholarship of $2500 from the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) society of Orange County. Domenic is the first recipient of this scholarship at Chapman University. The scholarship recognizes exceptional students annually who are recommended and sponsored by a CFA charterholder faculty member. Individual faculty members nominate outstanding students in the investment profession. Domenic was nominated by Professor Praveen Sinha.

ASBE Professor wins teaching award
Dr. P.K. Shukla, director of the Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics in the Argyros School of Business and Economics, has been selected as a winner of the 2008 Teaching Excellence Award from the Acton Foundation for Entrepreneurial Excellence (FEE), which provides national recognition for teachers dedicated to developing future entrepreneurs and delivering the best entrepreneurship courses at their schools. The winning teachers each receive a $1,000 award, as well as an all-expense-paid trip to the FEE Awards Ceremony in Austin, Tex. on Feb. 1 for each teacher and one of their top students, who will be awarded a scholarship of $1,000.

Chapman MBA Students Compete in International Challenge
The results of the 5th Annual Innovation Challenge have been released and a Chapman University MBA team has been recognized as one of the top 100 most innovative MBA teams in the world. The Innovation Challenge is the largest competition of its kind in the world. This year’s contest involved 1236 MBA contestants from 57 Countries. Chapman’s MBA team consisted of Greg Fiske, Crandall Kermott, Clayton Liggitt and Nicole Provansal. There were several competitive teams from major USA-based and foreign-based MBA programs.
Only five California programs were represented on the 2007 list of the Top 100 Most Innovative MBA Teams in the World – UC Berkeley; UCLA; UC Davis; Chapman University; and Santa Clara University.

Chapman University’s Entrepreneurship Programs Ranked Top Ten Nationally
Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review released today the fifth annual ranking of the top 50 graduate and undergraduate entrepreneurship programs in the nation. Chapman University’s undergraduate entrepreneurship program is ranked #6 nationally and ranks highest in California in the 2007 ranking; this is up from a rank of #15 in the 2006 ranking. Chapman University’s graduate entrepreneurship program is ranked #8 nationally in the 2007 ranking that is based upon a survey of 900 schools.

Two Chapman business students each win a $5,000 scholarship from Moss Adams LLP - Congratulations to Kristen Yergler and Chad Spangrud.
Kristen Yergler is currently a senior majoring in accounting. She has attended Chapman for all four years of her college education and has maintained a 4.0 GPA. After graduation, she will work as an audit and tax associate at Moss Adams. Additionally, she hopes to attend graduate school in the near future.
Chad Spangrud is currently a senior with a GPA of 4.0 and will be graduating with a BS in Accounting, a BS in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance, and a Communications minor. Last summer, he was offered an internship with Deloitte & Touche and, consequently, will begin his career with Deloitte in September as an auditor in the Consumer Business and Real Estate industries.

Two Chapman business students each win a $2,500 scholarship from the Orange County Long Beach Society of CPAs - Congratulations to Rebecca Lynn Shasha and Stephanie Bechtol
Rebecca Shasha is currently a junior majoring in Accounting and Business Administration with emphases in Finance and Entrepreneurship. She is involved in many organizations on campus including Alpha Kappa Psi, Alpha Phi, the Accounting Society, and others. She has maintained a 3.89 cumulative GPA and plans on getting her CPA following graduation.
Stephanie Bechtol is currently a senior with a GPA of 3.855 and is planning on interning at a public accounting firm this summer. She plans on graduating in December of 2007 and going on to work at a public accounting firm. She then aspires to become CPA certified and work her way up in the firm.
