ORANGE, Calif., May 4, 2009 -- Paul Davies, Ph.D., renowned scientist and professor at Arizona State University where he directs the BEYOND Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science, will give the 2009 undergraduate commencement address on May 23.

"Dr. Davies’ research has focused on the really big questions of existence with revolutionary impact, ranging from the origin of the universe to the origin of life, to the deep nature of reality, the mysteries of time and the realm of quantum physics," says Dr. Jeff Tollaksen, Ph.D., chair of Chapman's Department of Physics, Computational Science and Engineering. "He helped to launch the important discipline of quantum fields in curved space-time and to explain the emission of radiation by black holes and the origin of the ripples in the fading afterglow of the Big Bang."

Chapman University will recognize Dr. Davies’ many contributions to science with the degree of doctor of science, honoris causa at commencement. Says Tollaksen, "I think this honor acknowledges that Dr. Davies’ achievements are a reflection of our most esteemed hopes for our students and the embodiment of the mission of Chapman University."

In addition to a large collection of influential technical papers, Dr. Davies has authored a remarkably large number of inspiring books aimed at the wider public, dealing with the profound discoveries at the forefront of science and their implications for humanity and our place in the cosmos. He has also carried his outreach activities to television and radio in several countries, through a number of acclaimed documentary series and many expository interviews.
