The Malevolence of Just War:
Humanitarian Intervention and Benevolent Killing

4 p.m.

Joseph Runzo is professor of philosophy and religious studies at Chapman University and a Life Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. He is currently directing an international project of 65 experts in international law, ethics, international relations and history, to revise Just War Theory for the 21st Century. He has lectured on the ethics of war at the United States Military Academy West Point, to Senior Officers of the British Military, and in Jerusalem to officers of NATO military academies and to members of the Israeli Defense Forces. Dr. Runzo has lectured in South Africa on Private Military Companies and most recently lectured in Mexico, Sweden, Japan and Germany on the ethics of military humanitarian intervention. In this lecture he will address the fundamental ethical dilemma of military humanitarian intervention: is it ever morally right to initiate war and kill civilians in order to save civilians? Sponsored by the Sophia Omega Society and the Department of Philosophy. Admission is free. Information: 714-997-6636.
