Chapman Hosts Libertarian Conference, Nov. 13-14

Thursday and Friday, Nov. 13-14 Bush Conference Center, Beckman Hall 404 (Keynote Address Thurs. at 6:30 p.m.) Lyon Conference Center, Argyros Forum 209 (Fri. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) The 1st R. C. Hoiles Chair Conference:A discussion presented by a distinguished group of political thinkers regarding the ideals of libertarianism, including in-depth exploration of both the connections and the tensions between modern-day libertarianism and modern-day liberalism. The keynote address, “From Classical Liberalism to Libertarianism,” will be given by Dr. Tom G. Palmer, director of Cato University and senior fellow and vice president for international programs at the Cato Institute, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13 in the Bush Conference Center, Beckman Hall 404. Panels on Friday, Nov. 14, beginning at 9 a.m. in the Lyon Conference Center, Argyros Forum 209A, include “Extensive Eminent Domain: Pro and Con” with panelists Steven Greenhut, senior editorial writer and columnist, Orange County Register; and Larry Rosenthal, professor of law, Chapman University; “Environment vs. Property Rights” with panelists Robert J. Smith of the Center for Private Conservation, and Dr. Ernest Partridge, consultant, writer and lecturer in applied ethics and environmental ethics and co-editor of The Crisis Papers website; “Is Liberty Compatible with Equality? Pro and Con,” with panelists Dr. Jan Narveson, professor emeritus, University of Waterloo, and Dr. James Sterba, professor of philosophy, University of Notre Dame; and “Are Free Markets Sufficiently Just?” with panelists Dr. Jennifer Baker, assistant professor of philosophy, College of Charleston, and Dr. Jeffrey Reiman, professor of philosophy, American University.
