Why did you choose Chapman?

I chose Chapman because the small community benefits me a lot, and the school is generous in giving scholarships. Moreover, it is easy to develop connections with professors and students. Chapman has very good resources, programs and connections with other well-known institutions that I can benefit, such as Janes Financial Center, Wall street Prep Course, etc. That is why after I completed my bachelor’s degree here, I returned for my MBA degree.

I was shy and quiet before going to Chapman. After my undergrad here, I became more confident and outgoing. Most students of my classes were American, allowing me to quickly adapt to American culture and improve my English. Furthermore, people here encouraged me to learn and experience.

The residential area around Chapman is very friendly and quiet. I enjoy the small town with friendly people and a wide variety of food (Italian, American, Mexican, Japanese, etc.).

PhD in Education (emphasis in Disability Studies)  • Israel

Why did you choose Chapman?

My desire to learn and expand knowledge in the field of Disability Studies and accessibility services guides me to explore new topics and subjects. While I was still in Israel, I was looking for a PhD program in the USA in this field. As I was searching through the web I was happy to find useful information about Chapman’s Ph.D. program in Education with Disability Studies emphasis. On that time I started to connect the faculty and some of the students who had shared their experiences about the program on Chapman’s website.

On September 2013 I came to the USA for family trip and visited on campus. I was impressed by the personal attitude and the welcoming gesture I received. The students that I have met during that visit sounded excited and thankful for the program. It sounded to me like a great place to be in for learning, sharing my knowledge and experiences.

What was transition like coming to Chapman from overseas?

Like other people who move from their home land to a new country my transition to the USA and Chapman University accompanied with several challenges. I came to the USA with all my family (my husband and three teenage daughters) which is not very common. The first year was hard, and it took a while to adjust to the new environment, rules, and especially to for being away from family, friends and home. My experience at Chapman University has been very good from the beginning, but it also included many trials; being a full time student, trying to find a job position, and the affording of high tuition. In order to have social support and easier adjustment we deliberately chose to live in Irvine where we knew has a large Israeli community; this was very important for us as a family.

In what ways have you been able to take advantage of Orange County and its surrounding areas?

As a Chapman’s student I am thankful for some of the available services. As a woman with hearing loss disability I was happy to have the opportunity to use the services offered by Chapman’s Disability Services Office. I have CART service (live transcription service) in every class. This is a great support for me as a woman with disability and as a foreigner; it helps me a lot during my classes. The office of international student has also helped me and my family a lot as well, and we are grateful of the service.

What opportunities has Chapman provided for growth in your future career?

As a whole Chapman University is a very friendly university for diverse students; it is a very supportive higher education organization and it has open space for many cultures and students with different background.

MS Computational Sciences • Nigeria

Why did you choose Chapman?
I chose Chapman University because it was one of the few universities offering the degree I was seeking and because I was assisted in getting the scholarship I qualified for.

What was transition like coming to Chapman from overseas?
First, it was a feeling of curiosity getting on the airplane from my home country not knowing what to expect or what lies ahead of me. Then it was a feeling of thrill arriving at LAX, seeing how beautiful the Orange campus is and how cordial the community is. And right now, having made friends among my peers and professors, it is a feeling of love and the satisfaction that comes from the pursuit of excellence.

In what ways have you been able to take advantage of Orange County and its surrounding areas?
The strategic location of Chapman is such that I am only a short drive from some of the best places of attraction in Southern California, including Disneyland and the beauty of the surrounding cities such as Newport Beach and Catalina Island.

What opportunities has Chapman provided for growth in your future career?
The most important opportunity Chapman has provided is accessible professors who are very supportive. I have had the chance to participate in interdisciplinary research with and between many professors. Furthermore, I have had the chance of gaining teaching experience by tutoring during the first year of my studies and presently teaching a physics lab as an adjunct faculty. In addition, I will be teaching two computer science classes in Spring. These are invaluable experiences as I hope to live my life as a teacher and researcher in an academic institution.

What advice would you give to another student considering Chapman?
If you are motivated and Chapman offers the degree you are seeking, apply.
