Have you completed a Master's Degree in School Counseling or School Psychology*? Are you interested in being able to practice counseling or psychotherapy in private practice or clinical settings? If so, consider being a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) and becoming licensed by the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners (BBSE).  Must have completed a minimum of a 48 unit Masters degree.*

The Office of Extended Education offers (1-unit) Professional Development Courses for the LPCC Program. See below for Overview of Courses.

Below are the BBSE required (1 unit) Professional Development Courses* that need to be completed before applying for the license.

LPCX 9002 Spousal or Partner Abuse

This course covers spousal and partner abuse and will review assessment, detection, and intervention strategies for emotional harm, assault, rape and sexual assault and homicide.  Cultural factors, at-risk characteristics, same-gender abuse dynamics, safety planning and community resources are also included. 1 unit. Textbook Required (Journal): Partner Abuse: New Directions in Research, Intervention and Policy by John Hamel; ISSN:1946-6560; Springer Publishing Company, New York: New York; 2013; Volume 3.

LPCX 9003 Human Sexuality

The study of human sexuality reviews social activities, behaviors, series of actions and societal topics. This course offers a broad examination of human sexuality from the perspective of the practitioner, including the characteristics and method of assessment for people living with HIV/AIDS.  1 unit.  Textbook Required: Human Sexualities by Bobby Hutchison ; ISBN: 0078050685; McGraw-Hill Annual Editions; 2011 32nd Edition.

LPCX 9004 Aging and Long-Term Care

This course examines the biological, social and psychological aspects of aging including changes in health, relationships and issues related to medical, financial, housing and long-term care. Also included is the growing problem of elder abuse and neglect, including warning signs and assessment for abusive situations.  Textbook Required:  Aging by Harold Cox; ISBN: 9780078136085; McGraw-Hill Annual Editions; 2013/2014, 26th Edition.

LPCX 9005 California Law and Professional Ethics

This course explores and examines professional, legal, and ethical issues, including such topics as laws governing counseling and psychology, ethical reasoning, ethical principles, California regulations with respect to licensure, complaint resolution procedures, professional conduct, confidentiality, release forms, records and duty to warn.  Textbook Required: California Laws for Counselors and Psychotherapists by David J.D Leatherberry; ISBN: 9781933408262; LBD Publishers; 2011.

Fee for each Professional Development Course is $400.  These are weekend (15 hour) courses*.

Tricia Crosby-Cooper, Ph.D. is a practicing school psychologist in Santa Ana Unified School District and an assistant professor at Azusa Pacific University.  She received her doctorate in Education/School Psychology at the University of California Riverside and master’s degree also in School Psychology. She has worked in several Southern California school districts as a school psychologist. Most recently, she has co-developed a Student Support Team (SST) handbook an serves as a lead in the school district SST training as well as other trainings in Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM) and DIBELS at the middle school level. Her research interests include response-to-intervention (RtI), student support teams (SST) and children who are homeless.
