Advising Process

Chapman University offers a range of academic advising services to support your academic planning, assist with registration, and address special interests and needs.  While we hope this site will provide you with helpful resources, it is not meant to take the place of personal academic advising.  You should meet regularly with your advisor(s) and always consult an advisor prior to registering for courses.

Role of the Academic Advising Center

• Provide advising and resources for undeclared students
• Assist undergraduate students with degree planning, general education, academic policy, and registration
• Provide referrals to campus resources as necessary
• Provide training and support to faculty advisors

Role of the Faculty Advisor

• Provide major-specific advising
• Assist students with integrating GE and major course selection
• Provide guidance to students as the prepare for graduate school and professional opportunities

Role of Inside Track

• Provide guidance and support for incoming freshmen as they transition from high school to college (after the first year, students may elect to continue with Inside Track for a fee)
• Assist students with goal setting, time management, study skills, communication skills, etc.

Responsibilities of the Advisor and the Advisee

The relationship between advisor (whether faculty or staff) and advisee is one of shared responsibility.  Though you as a student are ultimately responsible for the choices you make in college, we realize that in order to make informed decisions, students need the mentoring and advice of academic advisors and others in the Chapman community.  Your advisors are the primary resources regarding academic issues, opportunities and programs, and can be thought of as the coordinators of your educational experiences.

What you can expect from your advisor:

• To clarify University policies, regulations, programs and procedures about which you have questions
• To offer advice on selecting courses and to assist you in developing an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements and complements your personal and professional interests
• To be available during scheduled office hours
• To maintain professional integrity, confidentiality, respect, and sensitivity in advising
• To be knowledgeable about and refer you to appropriate campus resources and services
• To maintain currency in advising trends and techniques through professional development

What your advisor expects from you:

• To take the initiative to contact your advisor
• To keep advising appointments and arrive on time
• To be prepared for the advising appointment - know your ID number, have a list of questions, and bring tentative course schedule (if registering for courses)
• To be familiar with the University catalog
• To observe academic deadlines
• To follow through with referrals made by your advisor
• To maintain a personal academic file or notes and copies of forms submitted for processing
