Tips for Securing On-Campus Jobs
- Apply widely. Be open to working in departments that you hadn't considered or doing jobs that you are unfamiliar with. Apply to at least 10 positions.
- Type your application. Typed applications look more professional and are much easier to read. Download the standard Student Employment application (PDF). Save the document to your computer and you've got an easy way to impress employers.
- Don't skimp on the application. Pick up a copy of the "Handbook to On-Campus Employment" available in the Student Employment Office to see a sample application and get tips on describing your work experiences. Fill it out completely because it is the only information that employers have when making decisions about candidates to interview.
- Consider hand delivering your application. It helps to put a name and a face with the piece of paper and you might get an interview on the spot!
- Follow up! After you've dropped off your application, follow up in a few days to make sure the right person received it, to find out when the department will begin interviewing and to express strong interest in the position.
- Brush up on interviewing. Prepare for your interview by reading the handout on Interviewing Techniques (see Career Development Center website). After an interview, send a brief thank you note, expressing appreciation for the interview and reiterating your interest.
- Keep looking. New jobs open up frequently, so keep an eye on the job board or website and apply immediately.
- Get help! If you need assistance, don't hesitate to ask for an appointment to meet with someone in the Student Employment Office.
