Entrance into the Department of Theatre is by
audition for students interested in majoring in theatre or by a portfolio
review for prospective students interested in specializing in technical theatre
and design. Incoming prospective students (including transfer students)
must also complete the admission requirements for Chapman University, including
the College of Performing Arts Departmental Application, preferably
prior to the audition date so that audition results may be linked to their
application. Notification of audition results will not be made until the
Chapman admission requirements are completed.
Please note that many Theatre Department classes are designed for majors only. Non-majors must contact the department to register for restricted courses. Any student who is interested in a theatre major is highly encouraged to audition as an incoming freshman. Entrance into theatre degree programs after freshman year is highly competitive and dependent on space available. The Theatre Department has no minor at this time. Current Chapman students who wish to audition for the department should follow the instructions on the Audition Dates & Requirements page.
After completing the audition or portfolio review, incoming prospective students will receive notification from Admissions if they have been accepted into the university and whether or not they have been accepted as a major in the theatre program.
All freshmen and transfer students begin in the Bachelor of Arts degree program. Theatre majors may audition to be considered for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance or Screen Acting degree programs in April of their first year in residence in the department.
Transfer students and current Chapman students who enter the Theatre program at the junior level are encouraged to complete the BA degree program, as the requirements for the BFA program will require, at a minimum, three years of study at Chapman, depending on the review of transfer credits. It is the responsibility of all prospective students to complete The Common Application and all Chapman University admission requirements by the specified deadline(s).
