The classical guitar program at Chapman University is directed by professor Jeffrey Cogan, M.A. Since 1982, he has built the program from humble beginnings into one of the strongest programs in the William D. Hall and Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Conservatory of Music. Students in this program consistently perform at a high level at many regional and national events. Our ensembles have toured Northern California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and most recently winning two first place awards in the National Guitar Competition in Brownsville, Texas.
Prof. Cogan was recently joined by Dr. David Cahueque, a talented guitarist-teacher in the Southern California area. In addition, the guitar program has a long history of visiting guest teachers and performers who contribute to a creative real-world educational climate. These include internationally known artists such as Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, David Leisner, The Gothenberg Combo, Enric Madriguera, Lily Afshar, Thibault Cauvin, Eric Franceries, Gabriel Guillen, Christopher Laughlin, Krzysztof Pelech, Randy Pile, Uros Dojcinovic, and many more.
Guitar students have numerous opportunities to perform in solo recitals, chamber music recitals, the New Music Ensemble concert, the annual concerto competition and solo concerto performances with the Chapman Chamber Orchestra.
Students enrolled in the music education program are welcome to use the guitar as their major instrument. In addition, many students enrolled in programs such as composition or music education – double major with guitar. Guitar majors are required to complete classes and repertoire as well as a senior recital in guitar.
