»Audition Dates

An attitude

If you are applying to the Department of Dance as a dance major, it is your responsibility to complete The Common Application and all Chapman University admission requirements (see application checklist) by the specified deadline(s). In addition, an audition (whether in person or by video upload) and the Arts Supplement via SlideRoom are also required. All applicants are encouraged to apply and audition as early as possible.

Auditions for fall must be completed by December 1 for early action and March 1 for regular action.  Students seeking to transfer into the fall semester must complete auditions by March 1.  All students are considered for talent awards at the time of the audition. Notification of talent awards is made in late March/early April.

Online Audition Appointments will be available in August 2014 - please check back at that time.  Applicants are encouraged to audition/interview in person whenever possible.

Once the in-person audition dates have been filled, prospective students must use the video audition option. Audition dates are for entrance into the BA in Dance program. Auditions for the BFA in Dance Performance are held for currently enrolled students only.

If you are unable to keep an audition appointment, as a courtesy, please cancel or change your appointment as soon as possible using the links above so that your space can be made available to another prospective student. In certain cases, special audition arrangements may be made through the department office, at the discretion of the department. It is recommended that the Chapman University application be completed prior to the audition, so that your audition results may be linked to your admission file. Audition results will only be provided to prospective students who have completed the Chapman application process.

Supplemental Application Instructions for a Dance Degree

All applicants to the Dance program are required to submit the Art Supplement via SlideRoom as part of the Common Application.  There is a $10 fee for the process, paid online when you submit your materials.

  • In-Person Audition applicants can complete SlideRoom before the Common Application
    • This applies primarily to Early Action Candidates who may not yet have submitted their Common Application.  Click here to begin your SlideRoom Supplemental Materials application.  Supplemental Materials must be submitted prior to your audition date.
    • Video Audition Upload applicants MUST complete and submit the Common Application before submitting SlideRoom
      • SlideRoom will not allow you to submit your Art Supplement until you have submitted your Common Application. However, you may create your account and add materials in SlideRoom concurrent to your Common Application.
      • In your Common Application:
        • Answer “yes” to “Do you intend to submit an Art Supplement?” on Chapman University’s questions. This will activate the “Art Supplement” tab in your Common App, where you will be provided a link to SlideRoom. In SlideRoom, please set up an account and complete your supplemental materials application.
        • NOTE: Whether auditioning/interviewing in person, or uploading your audition/materials online, SlideRoom is required.

We highly recommend that you begin your Common Application prior to submitting SlideRoom for your Art Supplement, as this will assist us in keeping your admissions application together with your supplemental materials.   Please note that the Department will not complete final applicant review until the Common Application is received by Admissions.

SlideRoom Art Supplement:  The SlideRoom Art Supplement consists of four parts required of all applicants.

1.  General Questions

2.  Dance Questionnaire

3.  Dance Supplemental Documents

4.  Media Uploads

IN-PERSON APPLICATIONS

You must have scheduled your audition prior to completing your SlideRoom Art Supplement.  You may begin the process, but until your audition is scheduled, you will not be able to submit the SlideRoom Art Supplement.  There is a link in SlideRoom to take you to the Dance Audition Scheduling site online.

All required materials must be submitted to SlideRoom prior to your in-person audition/portfolio review.

If you have begun your Common Application, and answered “yes” to, “Do you intend to submit an Art Supplement?”, you will be directed to set up a SlideRoom online account to complete your supplemental materials.  SlideRoom will ask you a series of general questions and specific Dance Department related questions.  When these are complete, it will ask you to submit the following Dance Supplemental Documents:

1.  Dance Resume - This should include your training, teachers, performance and choreographic experience. Include the names of theatres and directors you have worked with, as well as any media work you have done. You may want to include awards and any summer scholarships you have received.

2.  Letter of Recommendation - The letter should come from your most recent dance instructor or a professional with whom you have worked. By using the reference tab, please invite this teacher or professional to submit a letter of recommendation for you. Your recommender will receive an email prompting him or her to upload his or her recommendation into SlideRoom. This letter is confidential and you will not be able to read it via SlideRoom. Please remember the letter of recommendation uploaded in SlideRoom is specifically for the Department of Dance.  This is a separate recommendation from those required by the Office of Admissions.

When you have completed the upload of the above documents, you will be taken to the Media Page, where you can upload:

3.  Photograph - upload a photo of yourself so we can identify you.  Professional headshots are not required.  SlideRoom accepts many different image file formats.

Please bring a copy of your photo and your resume with you on your audition day.

If you are applying through an in-person audition, you have now completed your application and may submit it, or if you are still waiting to schedule your audition, you may save the application until the audition date is set.

IN-PERSON AUDITION PROCESS

Your audition for the department will consist of a dance solo performance and a brief, informal interview.  Prepare a 2-4 minute dance solo demonstrating a wide range of your dance technique and artistry. It may be a dance you choreographed or a dance someone has choreographed for you. (Please be sure to credit the choreographer.) If you have skills in more than one dance form (jazz, modern, ballet, tap etc.) you may wish to present two separate shorter pieces to demonstrate your talent. Technical prowess, presence, musicality, expression and performance quality will be evaluated to determine admittance to the Department of Dance as well as talent awards.

On the day of your audition:

  • Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time and warm up.
  • Bring your music on CD, iPod, iPad, phone, or computer
  • Bring a copy of your dance resume and a photo of yourself.
  • Wear a leotard and tights or other form-fitting clothes with appropriate footwear as needed. Please do not wear skirts, T-shirts, shorts, sweats or costumes.
