MFA Creative Writing • Iran

Why did you choose Chapman?
Have been in touch with one of the professors since 1998. I had the honor of collaborating with him in some articles and chapters in books under his supervision. We've discussed art, literature, literary theory, etc. etc. Chapman has the Creative Writing major and most universities do not have it. I do like it here. All writers and thinkers are translators. We read the world and translate ... Each moment!

What was transition like coming to Chapman from another country?
Moving to the US was one of my big wishes in life. Thanks to Chapman, I've made new friends and enjoy productive moments with them. We do not belong to where we've been born. Master Mark Twain says: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

In what ways have you been able to take advantage of Orange County and its surrounding areas?
OC is a wonderful place with all beauties to be discovered. Take your time reading the fallen/falling leaves. An afternoon stroll is more beautiful in this area.

What opportunities has Chapman provided for growth in your future career?
The degree would help a lot. Professors are knowledgeable and staff are truly wonderful. Constructivism is working well here ... The teacher is the facilitator to help students meet with their true 'selves.'

What advice would you give to another student considering Chapman?
Read, write and prosper! Do your own things in your own way and never give up! We share parts of our identity with others in our writings ... Go, explore this at Chapman. You'll enjoy.

MBA/MS Food Science • Mexico

Why did you choose Chapman?
I chose Chapman because it is the only university that offers the joint Master in Food Science and MBA. The combined program is so thoughtfully planned that it provides the students with all the tools necessary to pursue a career in the food industry.

What was transition like coming to Chapman from another country?
Moving to Orange County was very exciting. I had been to Orange County before to visit Chapman and I fell in love with the campus. I do miss my family and friends back home but I've made great friends here and I enjoy getting to know more of this city.

In what ways have you been able to take advantage of Orange County and its surrounding areas?
Orange County is a great place to live. Every weekend there is something new to do. I love going to the beach, Disneyland, or to the Anaheim Angel's games. However, Orange County also has many company's headquarters and corporations that provide great opportunities for employment.

What opportunities has Chapman provided for growth in your future career?
Not only does Chapman provide excellent education, but also Chapman's faculty and alumni connections provide valuable guidance and support to help students reach their goals. Thanks to my faculty advisor Dr. Prakash and Chapman alumni, I got a job as the Innovation Manager for a California based snack food company where I get to apply both of my degrees in my every day tasks.

What advice would you give to another student considering Chapman?
Choosing Chapman was the best decision I could possibly make. I advise students to keep deadlines in mind, fill out the application very carefully, and have constant communication with the admission department to make sure everything is in order. The time and effort put into applying will be worth it in the end. If possible, I would also recommend students to visit Chapman and meet with the faculty.

MS Computational Sciences • Nigeria

Why did you choose Chapman?
I chose Chapman University because it was one of the few universities offering the degree I was seeking and because I was assisted in getting the scholarship I qualified for.

What was transition like coming to Chapman from overseas?
First, it was a feeling of curiosity getting on the airplane from my home country not knowing what to expect or what lies ahead of me. Then it was a feeling of thrill arriving at LAX, seeing how beautiful the Orange campus is and how cordial the community is. And right now, having made friends among my peers and professors, it is a feeling of love and the satisfaction that comes from the pursuit of excellence.

In what ways have you been able to take advantage of Orange County and its surrounding areas?
The strategic location of Chapman is such that I am only a short drive from some of the best places of attraction in Southern California, including Disneyland and the beauty of the surrounding cities such as Newport Beach and Catalina Island.

What opportunities has Chapman provided for growth in your future career?
The most important opportunity Chapman has provided is accessible professors who are very supportive. I have had the chance to participate in interdisciplinary research with and between many professors. Furthermore, I have had the chance of gaining teaching experience by tutoring during the first year of my studies and presently teaching a physics lab as an adjunct faculty. In addition, I will be teaching two computer science classes in Spring 2013. These are invaluable experiences as I hope to live my life as a teacher and researcher in an academic institution.

What advice would you give to another student considering Chapman?
If you are motivated and Chapman offers the degree you are seeking, apply.

Jun Yong Lee
South Korea

Jun Yong Lee

Full Time MBA  • South Korea

Why did you choose the Argyros School of Business and Economics (ASBE)?

Jun chose ASBE because of its good reputation, strong alumni network, and generous scholarship opportunities.

Making the Transition

In 2001, after finishing college and feeling the effects of the bad economy in Korea, Jun relocated to Brazil. Throughout his time in Brazil, Jun encountered a variety of CEOs and CFOs and wanted to emulate them. “Most of them had MBAs from the United States,” he recalls. In 2011, Jun and his wife moved to Orange County and he began working on mastering the English language and completing business school applications. The cultural differences and learning the language were his biggest challenges when starting the graduate school. Jun has enjoyed the challenge and especially the opportunities he has had in his courses to collaborate with his peers.

Real World Application

Another point that Jun has liked about the Chapman MBA programs is the opportunity he has to connect what he is learning to his previous work. A course that Jun found especially beneficial for real-world application was Negotiations. Before the class, Jun admits that he did not fully understand negotiation tactics, but afterwards, the classes really made him think about strategy. "It was exciting and a lot of fun," he states. “I now analyze the process more critically than before."

Life after Chapman

Jun plans on staying in the United States and working in the manufacturing industry, consulting, or in accounting as a CPA or CFO.

What advice would you give to another student considering Chapman?

Jun’s advice to prospective Chapman MBA students is this: “You must be ready to study hard!” He praises the “strong curriculum” in helping students broaden their knowledge and acknowledges the faculty members’ willingness to help students.

Why did you choose Chapman?
I chose Chapman because they offered a program I was very interested in, and I had heard great things about the school. The location was also very important to me, since I wanted to stay in the OC.

What was transition like coming to Chapman from overseas?
I moved to California 3 years before I became a student at Chapman, so it was not a big transition for me. Chapman has also been great with the international students, and I have always felt taken care of.

In what ways have you been able to take advantage of Orange County and its surrounding areas?

The OC is beautiful, and the weather is always nice. The beaches are my favorite part of SoCal. There are also a lot of beautiful hikes, and places to go biking. The OC has a lot of great shopping and dining. It has also been nice to live close to big cities like Los Angeles and San Diego.

What opportunities has Chapman provided for growth in your future career?
The program has made me grown professionally and as a person a lot. The professors have been very helpful at Chapman. The school has also been a great help to me in the process of getting internships and professional experiences.

What advice would you give to another student considering Chapman?
It is a great school, but make sure the school offers the right program. Plan ahead to meet deadlines and other important dates. Do a lot of research, to make the process easier.
